THE MELBOURNE CUP.

The great event of the Australian meeting will be decided at Flemington on Tuesday,, and although the interest ‘taken (by New Zealandersis microscopic compared to the interest taken in the event a few years back, still the result of the race is eagerly looked forward to. It was in this race that Carbine placed the seal on his fame, by carrying his 10.5 to victory in record time, and defeating the largest field that ever lined up at the barrier. There are a number of New Zealand horses in this year’s race, but reports from Australia as to their prospects are anything but encouraging, except perhaps in the case of Lady Lucy, who a cable informed us put up a record gallop one morning last week. Let us hope the New Zealand Cup winner is at her best, as a win for Mr. Toxward’s mare would be received with delight. Of course we can only believe what we read in the Australian papers, but when it is remembered that the mare was suffering from pneumoniia after her arrival at Randwick, it is hard to see how she can be at her best. She is a thorough stayer, and fit and well would undoubtedly take a power of beating with 7.12 in the saddle. Comedy King scored a brilliant victory over Prince Foote, Pendil, Maltine and the best Australia could produce at Randwick, arid his performance had the effect of making him a strong favourite. His subsequent efforts have not been pleasing, but with 7.11 he is nicely placed. Trafalgar is a beautiful stayer and will be going on when most of his opponents are stopping, notwithstanding that he will have 9.2 in the saddle. Flavinius is in form and as he won the Caulfield Cup at the right end, he should again be hard to beat. Britain, 7.5, is a horse with some fair performances and a win on his part would occasion no surprise. A light-weight well spoken of is Flavian, who ran a good second to EyeGlass at Caulfield. To sum up there is material for a grand race, and also plenty of room for a surprise. If only Britain, Flavinius and Trafalgar of those most before the public go to the post, the race should be a good one.
