CANTERBURY.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 6
Los Angelos is now a firm favourite in Christchurch for the New Zealand Cup, but I would not recommend anyone to back him at the present price —lO to 1. The son of San Francisco has never done anything to warrant him being pounced upon as being a good thing for the Cup, and although he has been backed 'by people who have made money out of Yaldhursttrained horses in the past it does not follow that he is going to out-distance every horse in the race next November.
Penza, who won the first race on the opening day at was voted the best of good things, and as a result all shrewd backers and those who only put their money up on certain occasions, pocketed a tidy sum. Sir Frisco, who won two races at the Horowhenua meeting, has incurred 71b penalty for the N.Z. Cup, his weight now being 8.3-
Information has been received in Christchurch that the three-year-old colt Sunburnt, by Multiform —'Drought, arrived in good condition in Sydney, and is likely to play a prominent part in the Epsom Handicap. Quite a large number of horses engaged in the New Zealand Cup will be racing at Ashburton. Among the nominations for the principal events I notice the names of Ingoda, Tikitere, Cronstadt, Grand Slam, Dabchick, Nightlight, Crown Derby, Martist, St. Aidan, Lovelorn, Outlander, Los Angelos and Gunboat.
From enquiries made to-day I learn that Los Angelos, has been backed for more money than any other horse engaged in the N.Z. Cup. . The owner of Roosevelt and John overlooked the acceptances for the N.Z. Cup on Friday last, hence the non-appearance of their names in the published list of acceptances-
