The final of the New South Wales inter-club amateur premiership for the “Dunlop” shield provided the finest race yet witnessed in connection with the competition, which was inaugurated as far back as 190 2. The
two teams that qualified for the final were Marrickville and Redfern, each club being represented by five riders. Victory rested with the former team after a great finish, the winning club scoring first, second, sixth and seventh places, as against Redfern’s third, fourth, fifth and eighth. Only a few feet divided the riders as they passed the judge. The first ten miles were covered in 2 smin 2 ssec, twenty miles in 51min 7sec, and thirty miles in Ihr 17min 22 3-ssec, times that convey a good idea of the class of riders that are enrolled amongst the New South Wales amateurs. “Dunlops” scored first, second and third places. Single pace was provided by amateur riders. A very large crowd witnessed the finish. * • • • The Bathurst to Sydney road race, decided on Saturday last, 133 miles, promoted by the Barnett Glass Rubber Company, was held in fine weather and the roads were in good order. There were 60 starters. F. J. Foxovfer had 41 minutes’ start from Alpin, the scratch man, and led the whole way. He covered the journey in Bh. 2m. 495. F. Walcott made the fastest time, 7h. 27m. 10s. Nothing has been heard of the New South Wales champion road rider, Tom Larcombe, since the last road racing season, and it was rumoured that he had retired from the road. Such is not the case, however, for, according to the “Daily Telegraph,” Sydney, this popular rider has notified his intention of making an attempt on Saturday, August 27th, to win the £2O cash offered by |the Dunlop Rubber Co. to the first Australasian rider who lowers Leon Meredith’s world’s unpaced 100 miles record of 4hr 52min 57sec, and he also intends to ride in the Goulburn-Syd-ney road race. If any rider in Australia can improve upon Meredith’s figures it is Larcombe. fastest time winner in two “Warrnambool-Mel-bourne,” several Goulburn to Sydney, and other long distance events.
