HAWKE’S BAY.

(From Our Own Correspondent?. NAPIER, March 11. Miriam, the younger full sister to Moriarty, has been -taken in hand by J. S. O’Neill, who acquired possession of her last week.. For some time the filly was studying under J. McLaughlan, of Greenmeadows, and while under his tuition never demonstrated that she was anything out of the ordinary, and consequently he returned her to her owner, a follower of the sport who is domiciled at Clive. Eiya now occupies a box at A. Raynor’s stables at Greenmeadows. Malaki’s son looks none the worse for his exertions at Waipukurau, notwithstanding that he was not nearly forward enough in. condition there, to do himself justice. / •.?. Centaur is still 'one l of the hospital lot, but his trainer anticipates thathe will have the gelding soon well enough to put in active commission. •, - ■ Though El Dorado is a constant visitant to the Napier Park ’ tracks,' the ’chaser has not had a go over the obstacles for some time. Apparently Gold Reef’s son has quite recovered from the. ailment that some time back prevented him from, being sent along on the trying-out circuits. Needlework has been leased by Mr. L. B. Mackersey to H. Hickey, the lease expiring next March. Sleacombe, Milennial, and Karakatuara have been giving excellent displays over the battens at Napier Park during the past week. The latter, who Is a new chum of the trio at the business, fences In a bold, fearless style.. " The Gisborne trainer, G. Jones* arrived- at Gteenmeadows - on Friday with PaiSano, Continuance and Stour-

ton. All of his pupils look well forward, and the two former are to be given exercises over the hurdles this week.

The rising two-year-old full brother to Gold Thread and Gold Circle is being ridden. The youngster is an attractive-looking lot, and if bis galloping powers are on a par with his looks, he will take a bit of settling when he is fully prepared for the fray. Besides El Dorado, J. McLaughlan has in work the Charlemagne —Stressa filly,, Moreykoff, Full Cry, Goldemar, Goldmine and Golden Water. The contingent all give ample proof that their educator has been putting in some of his best to get his students shipshape for their coming battles. G. Davis has in hand a batch of youngsters who are likely participants in coming two-year-old events. Of the bunch War Scare, Bobrikoff’s halfsister by Martian, looks as if she would come to hand the speediest. She is a well-turned filly, though somewhat on the small, fine side. One of the best-looking youngsters running on the Te Mahanga estate is a two-year-old half-sister and full sister to Kopu and Meremere. Possessed of great bone, size and substance, she in colour and make greatly favours her half-blooded relative. .Unluckily, she saw the light of day just a trifle too soon, for her appearance on this planet was made before the Ist of August, and for purposes of racing she was practically a year old the day she was born. On that score she will be of no account in weight-for-age events, as she will be giving away a year in weight to horses who had been born a few days after her. Coming events cast their shadows, and the appearance of Seraphic’s name in the list of the Hawke’s Bay nominations may presumably be taken as a fact that his owner, Mr. A. F. Douglas, will be back in the Dominion very shortly, notwithstanding the reports that have appeared stating that the co-partner in the Te Mahanga estate will arrive here on such and such a date. His relatives know nothing whatever regarding his movements. Mr. A. F. Douglas has running on the station Waipu,. St. Albert, Merriwai, Mountain Shrine, and a three-year-old son of Torpedo and Cornelion, so that if he returns he will have something in the way ,of horseflesh to go on with.
