HAWKS'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB’S SPRING MEETING.

: SECOND DAY. ELYSIAN WINS THE GUINEAS. The Spring Meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club was concluded on Thursday in fine weather. There was a large attendance, and the course was in splendid order. The totalisator handled £OIO7 for the day, as compared with £7439 on the second day last year, representing a falling off of £1332. The total for the meeting was £12,099, as against £13,818 of last year’s fixture. There were nine bookmakers on the ground. The results were:— MANGAPAPA HACK HURDLE RACE of 100 sovs. One mile and a-half. Mr. J. T. Jamieson’s blk g Waipunehu, aged, by Waiuku—Leone, 9.11 (C. Price) 1 Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Martyrium, 9.11 (A. Julian) 2 Mr. D. Hepburn’s Nadine, 9.6 (T. Pine) 3 Also started: Haurangi 9.1, Burton 9.0. Won by four lengths. Nadine was a poor third. Time, 2min. 50sec. NGATARAWA HACK HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Once round. Mr. M. Johnson’s blk g Cork, 4 yrs, by Merriwee—Float, 7.0 (T. Carroll).. 1 Mesdames Foss and Steuart’s First Gun, 9.0 (H. Gray) 2 [Mr. S. Williamson’s King’s Prize, 8.13 (L. Wilson) 3 Also started: Polynice 7.2 (carried 7.4%), Master Stent 6.7. Won easily by half a length. About three lengths separated the second and third horses. Time, lmln. Blsec. HAWKE’S BAY GUINEAS of 300 sovs. For three-year-olds. One mile. Mesdames Foss and Steuart’s br c Elysian, by Soult—Dreamland, 9.1 (H. Gray) 1 Mr. E. J. Watt’s Maori King, 8.10 (S. Reid) 2 Mr. H. Gaisford’s Tawhaki, 8.10 (C. Jenkins) 3 Also started: Nautiform 8.10, Golden Water 8.5, Reformist 8.5, Waimoa 8.5, Expansion 8.5. The favourite, Nautiform, had the misfortune to draw the outside running, and made a wide detour in order to head the others. At the back he was leading, closely followed by Tawhaki and Elysian. This order was maintained to the railway bend, when Elysian went to the front, and not being troubled in the home run, won comfortably by two lengths. Maori King beat Tawhaki for second honours by three lengths. Time, lmln. 41 3-ssec. TE MAHANGA HANDICAP HURDLE RACE of 130 sovs. One mile and a-half. Sir W. R. Russell’s ch g Corazon, 6 yrs, by Coeur de Lion—Rasulka, 10.0 (J. (O’Connell) 1 Mr. G. C. Hamilton’s Forest, 9.8 (Parramore) 2 Mr. W. J. Douglas’ Polyanthus, 11.2 (O’Connell) 3 Also started: Rangihaeta 11.0, Rawhiti ’9.7, Le Beau 9.0. Corazon ran to the front entering the straight and eventually justified his position as favourite by winning, although only by a long neck. Inside the distance Forest came with a late run and beat Polyanthus for second place by a length. Tiitae, 2min. 49 2-ssec. JUVENILE HANDICAP of 100 sovs. For two-year-olds. Four furlongs. Mr E. J. Watt’s br f Winning Post, by Merriwee—Victoria Cross, 7.13 (H. Gray) 1 Mr. H. H. Pharazyn’s Bunkum, 7.12 (Sceats) 2 Mr Melrose’s Lord Kelvin, 7.12 (Deeley) 3 Also started: Entente 7.13 (carried 8.1), Sea Eagle 7.7, Enyo 7.7, Suffragette 7.7, Ngakau 7.0 (carried 7.3), Colleen Mary 6.10 (carried 6.13). Winning Post got away with the lead and kept it all the way, winning by three

lengths. Bunkum beat the favourite (Lord Kelvin) for second place by a head. Time, 49 3-ssec. SPRING HANDICAP of 125 sovs. One mile and a-quarter. Mr. G. H. Miller’s b g Sandstream, 5 yrs, by San Fran —Ua, 8.10 (C. Jenkins) • • 1 Mr. T. H. Lowry’s Downfall, 8.13 (L. Wilson) 2 Hon. J. D. Ormond’s Diamond Star, 6.10 (H. Watson) 3 Also started: Bridge 6.13, Mysticism 6.7. Sandstream won comfortably by about three lengths, the same distance separating the second and third horses. Time, 2min. 7 l-ssec. FLAXMERE HACK HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. T. H. Lowry’s b c Multiple, 3 yrs, by Multiform—Soult Girl, 7.9 (L. Wilson) 1 Mr. D. McNamara’s Awha, 7.8 (H. Price) 2 (Mr. H. M. Rathbone’s Waioriki, 7.9 (Lowe) 3 Also started: Meremere 8.3, Idealism 7.3, Motukawa 6.7. Multiple soon showed out in front, and kept his advantage till the finish, winning by a length from Awha. Time, lmln 15 l-ssec. FINAL HANDICAP of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. E. J. Watt’s b f Kilindini, 3 yrs, by Kilcherin—Mousqueterie, 7.6 (carried 7.8) (F. Cress) 1 Mr. G. Hunter’s Bliss, 6.7 (J. Kemp)... 2 Mr. D. Kemp’s Vi, 7.11 (W. Kirk) 3 Also started: Gold Lace 9.2, Truganini 7.13, Voetgang 6.10 (carried 6.13), Ideate 6.7. Kilindini won by about two lengths. Truganini fell at the entrance to the straight and lost her jockey, but neither were hurt. Time, lmln. 15 l-ssec.
