THE A.R.C. GREAT NORTHERN MEETING.

THE JUMPERS’ CARNIVAL COMMENCES ON SATURDAY.

One of the most interesting meetings of the whole year is the Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern Meeting, which commences on Saturday next. Many people complain that nowadays there are far too many races over four, five, and six furlongs, which are over, so to speak, as soon as they are started. These give but little to watch as a spectacle, for almost before the horses can be recognised they are past the post and the race is over. It is the number of these races on a programme which causes the reproach that if it were not for the betting very few would attend a racecourse. . Quite otherwise is it with the big winter fixture. Here the lover of a good horse has something to see, and whether he bets or not, he gets full value for his entrance money. Five races out of the seven on the opening day are run over distances from a mile and a-quarter up to two miles and ahalf, and, as the list includes two hurdle races and a steeplechase, there is certain to be some interesting sport to watch. Under the circumstances it may be fully expected that, if the day prove fine, there will be a big crowd at headquarters next Saturday. The principal event on the card is the Great Northern Hurdle Race, for which the acceptances are very num-

erous. This list includes a large number of our best jumpers, and even if some of those engaged seem hardly class enough to run out a strong two miles and a-half race, the field should be large and the contest a keen one. The Cornwall Handicap is the other rich stake on the opening day, and here there should be a fair field, but there is nothing very remarkable in the way of quality engaged. With a total acceptance of 103 as against 91 last year (irrespective of the Hunt Club event) it will be seen that the prospect of large fields and keen racing is good. Mr Hartland and his large staff may be relied upon to have all the arrangements for the success of the gathering properly carried out. Mr Lusk will as usual occupy the judge’s box, and Mr C. O’Connor will of course do the starting. The first race will start at noon. The acceptances are as follows: —
