A PINCH OF SNUFF
At the forthcoming Tobacco Exhibition in London an attempt will be made to spread the habit of snuff-taking by the free distribution of snuff. Snuff-taking is by no means an extinct habit. It has been estimated, according to the “Manchester Guardian,” that about 500,0001 b ’ of it is sold every year, most of it import<ed snuff from Brazil. There are on the outskirts of Sheffield a couple of snuffmills, from which a good deal of English snuff comes. It is rather curious that snuff-taking is the earliest form of the use of tobacco—on the Continent, at least, for in England smoking or “drinking” was first. In England snuff-taking did not become really popular until the eighteenth century, and then it was almost universal among the polite.
