THE ANNIVERSARY REGATTA.
AN OLD-TIME FUNCTION. Having of necessity travelled a iong distance by sea, the first arriva's in New Zealand naturally had a strong love for boats and boating. One of the first proceedings in the way of amusement was the holding of a regatta. This took place as far back as 1840 and the function, as a means of 1 commemorating the founding /of the colony,' has held its own in popular favour ever since- For many years it was the. Qii’y big event of the day, but now, what with the Ponsonby Regatta preceding it, and the fact, a somewhat regretable one, that the Takapunar races also take place on the same day-, it has somewhat diminished . the lustre of the premier, aquatic carnival; but even now it is still the star attrac.ion of the Dominion’s natal, day. On Wednesday next we may expect to see the Waitemata covered with white winged crafts
of a l sizes and rigs. The scow race is awlays a popular item, and this year there has rightly been added a race for trading cutters. A l classes of yachts have been catered for, while in the motor launch section, something very special is promised in the way of sport. There are all sorts of rumours flying about as to the speed marvels which are to compete for the big prizes. The programme appears in this issue and it may be as weli to remind owners that entries must be made between 7.30 and 9.30 p.m. on Friday, January 24. Mr C. C. Dacre, the secretary, will take such entries at the club rooms, 58 Queen S'reet-
