SPORTING ! SPORTING! SPORTING! A GREAT RACE. DUNEDIN BEER WINS. THISTLE HOTEL TRAINING STABLES. The Ales, Wine, and Spirits Cup has been won by Dunedin Beer by Free House out of Public Opinion. Also started: C. and E.; Great Northern Hops, out of British; Imperial, out of United, trained by Captain Cook 999 years ago. J.B. landed Dunedin Beer at the post fit to run for a kingdom. Dunedin Beer is a beautiful dappled grey, stands 16 hands 1 foot high, with a long stride, and finished off in J.B.’s usual style, trained to the hour. C. and E. is too fat, nut I believe if fit and well would run a fair race, only F.M. has hurried him too much in his work to catch Dunedin Beer, and made him a roarer. G'.N.H. has not been acclimatised yet. and his trainer, D.M., has great trouble to keep him on his feet. Oats are too dear, and his spirits are low. D. does not know what to do with his horse, but as he showed the most pace of the 57 that have been tried, D.M. was compelled to start him —of which you know the result. Imperial, out of Variety, is built on Delicate lines, and caused his trainer, Captain Cook, many sleepless nights, as he could not stand more than one gallop per week, and could not carry weight. Imperial started the outsider of the party, and from the rise of the barrier was left hopelessly behind. At 3.15 p.m. on the Ellerslie Racecourse, O’C. lined the Quartette up at the two-mile post. Imperial was very troublesome at the post. Captain Cook was fined for his charge breaking away at the barrier with O.C.’s permission. G.N.H. was the next to cause trouble. D.M. was fined for his horse not facing the barrier when called, upon by O’C., the starter. C. anf i E., with F.M. in the saddle, was quiet and reconciled at the barrier, and seemed to know his fate. Dunedin Beer, showing muscle like hogsheads all over him, was. full of condition, and his coat shone like silk, and seemed confident of victory, and faced the barrier with an air of freedom which none of the other competitors had, and who seemed much tied up in their gait. “They’re off They’re off!” could be heard from 80,000 spectators who witnessed the race. Imperial, out of Vanity, led for two yards from an even start, G.N.H. led for three yards, then came Dunedin Beer with his long stride, C. and E. labouring behind. At the five-furlong post Dunedin Beer seemed to have their measure; then you could hear from 80,000 throats: DUNEDIN BEER WINS. DUNEDIN BEER WINS. DUNEDIN BEER WINS. DUNEDIN BEER HAS BEATEN G. AND E. DUNEDIN BEER HAS BEATEN G.N.H, DUNEDIN BEER HAS BEATEN IMPERIAL. DUNEDIN BEER HAS PUT UP A RECORD HE WINS —IT’S ALL OVER. They are chasing him ! They can’t catch him ! Dunedin Beer, by Free House out of Public Opinion, has beaten them and the others that were backing them. By winning the above race Dunedin Beer has become a strong favourite with the public, and the stable where Dunedin Beer is trained is always full of buyers. We are informed that PAT. QUINLAN, Who purchased Dunedin Beer, has won £20,000 over his horse’s victory. If you call on Pat, at the THISTLE HOTEL. He will be pleased to tell you how he became the purchaser of DUNEDIN BEER.
