LACROSSE.
Notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather an interesting practice match took place last Saturday in the Domain Cricket Ground for the final selection of the inter-provincial team. There was a good attendance. In view of the fact that the Wellington Association, are sending a team to try conclusions with the local players next Saturday, the selection committee, consisting of Messrs. Walton, Strickland and Nolan, met on Saturday evening and chose the following players as representatives of Auckland: —Goal, Kitching; point, W. J. Nolan; cover-point, Ward; third-man, W. Gummer; right wing defence, F. Brown; left wing defence, H. Walton; right wing attack, A. Walton; left wing attack, H. Brassey; centre, H. C. McCoy; third home, W. H. Graham; second home, N. Strickland; first home, W. Philson. Emergencies, Horspnni (2). Choyce and Keen.
With the idea of assisting to defray the expenses of members of travelling teams, the New Zealand Lacrosse Association has decided to make a nominal charge for spectators at next Saturday’s inter-city match. Tickets may be obtained from members of the association.
Mr. Noton has been appointed referee for next Saturday’s match —an excellent selection, as he has been a keen enthusiast since the game was first started here some years ago. He should suit the billet to a T.
Kitching (late of Melbourne) is one of the best goal-keepers Auckland has yet seen, and should prove a valuable man for next Saturday’s match.
W. J. Nolan’s ever clever movements are likely to puzzle the attack, as he is a fine all-round player.
McCoy, at centre, should prove of great assistance. His throwing is excellent, and he knows the game thoroughly.
Strickland, of Brisbane, is a finished lacrosse "player, and his movements in play are worthy of notice. He should strengthen the side.
Philson, with Strickland, should prove of great assistance at notching goals.
The match against Wellington next Saturday should be well worth watching. Auckland is not so strong as was the case a few seasons ago, but the players can be depended upon to put up a good game. It is a pity that the date clashes with the big Winter Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, as doubtless many who will be at the latter fixture would otherwise have attended the lacrosse match.
