HAWKE’S BAY.

NAPIER, October 24. During McLaughlin’s absence with Contender and Captain Shannon, Silver Lead and Immolation are under

the guidance of Raynor at Greenmeadows. Armistice, Helen Portland and St. Lyra, who have been quartered here since the Park meeting, leave for Riccarton on Thursday. Jack Pot will also make the trip South to the C.J.C. convincing ground on the same day. The Wairoa Racing Club have reappointed Messrs. A. Wood and W. G. Nightingale starter and handicapper respectively for their annual meeting. From Gisborne I have received word that Reservoir, the young full brother to Douche, is making good progress in his studies. Other horses in the Poverty Bay district that are also showing out well in their track efforts are Lee-Enfield (a recent arrival), Sarilla, Te Re Rahui, Marangi, Te Uku, Hemi, Materoa, and a half-sister to Canteen by Phoebus Apollo. The two latter are intended as contestants in the Hack Scurry at the approaching spring venture of the Poverty Bay Turf Club. Martyrfeldt is now being educated by her owner, Mr. A. B. Newman. Montigo and Miss Adeline will assist at the C.J.C. spring gathering at Riccarton next month. The pair will most likely leave Hastings for the South at the end of the week. The following foalings have occurred during the last week at Karamu: Banjo (Dreadnougnt—Lyre), a colt, Camelot (Sir Lancelot —Trentalto), a colt, Ideal (Dreadnought— Mount Ida), a colt, Miro (Dreadnought—Spinaway), a colt, Roie (St. Leger or Capti^ator—Hippona; a colt, Aphrodile (Apremont—Watersprite) a colt, Film (Eiridspord—Margaret) a colt, Miss Never (Dunlop—Straightshot) a colt, all to Birkenhead. At Longlands: Variety (Natator —Last Chance), a colt, Indian Queen (Stepniak —Ranee Nuna), a colt, both to Merriwee. At Okawa; Bijou (Medallion —Sapphire), a colt, Coreleone (Coeur-de-lion—St. Katherine), a colt, both to Royal Fusilier. At Mangatar ata: Namoa (Nordenfeldt —Tres Deuce) a colt, Julia (Ingomar—Sythia) a filly, Bonne Idee (Nordenfeldt —My Idea) a filly, Motuotaria (Jet d’Eau —Seraph), a filly, all to Waiuku; Primula (Torpedo—Primrose) a filly to The Possible. At Ngararaua: Waitio, a colt to Gold Reef. Owing to the death of The Possible from a general break-up of thd system, the majority of Mr. S. H. Gollan’s brood mares this season will be associated with Waiuku. D. Sullivan, who had a small bone in one of his arms broken through Asteroid falling with him in the Korokipo Hurdles last week at Napier Park, is at present an outdoor patient of the Napier Hospital, and is progressing favourably toward recovery. Diamond Star, the yearling full brother to Zimmerman, got the award in the thoroughbred class for yearling colts at the agricultural show here last week. J. Rollo is hacking about Aroha. The gelding has had a lengthened spell, and looks none the worse for his retirement from active duties. Miss Rexer, Mangonui’s two-year-old daughter by San Fran, the property of Mr. Poyzer, of Wairoa, is to be turned out for a holiday. She is a sweet-turned filly, who should most assuredly improve with age. Mr. G. P. Donnelly has claimed the following names for some of his youngsters:—Two-year-old filly by Gold Reef —Pursering, Gold Thread; two-year-old colt by Gold Reef —Pearlshot, the Rand; yearling filly by Gold Reef —Como, Kantaku. Intelligence, who made a successful debut at the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meeting in August last, has up to date carried out her bat, her record reading four starts four wins.
