PRICE OF A DRINK.
With the object of taking such measures as would enable drinks to be obtained at a reasonable price, a meeting, attended by 50 persons, was held recently at Yarra Glen, Victoria. Mr. F. Searl, who was voted to the chair, explained the circumstances under which the meeting had been convened, and said that the towns concerned were Healesville, Queenstown, Kangaroo Ground, Coldstream, and Lilydale. The prices charged for drinks at hotels in these townships were regarded as not altogether reasonable, and it was considered high time that something should be done to reduce the amounts. At present sixpence was asked and obtained for a glass of ale, wine, or rum. After an animated discussion, from which it was obvious that those present were of one mind on the important question under consideration, it was unanimously resolved that after the following Sunday no one who had the success of the movement at heart should enter any hotel to buy drink unless the prices ruling in Melbourne were adopted. Those who were present at the meeting are sanguine as to the result of the tactics they have adopted, and a vote of thanks to the chairman testified to their appreciation of the manner in which he had arranged matters.
