GAS VERSUS ELECTRICITY STREET LIGHTING IN LONDON. EXTRACT FROM ' I’HE NEW ZEALAND HERALD’S ” LONDON CORRESPONDENCE, 10th MARCH, 1906. GAS v. ELECTRICITY. “The substitution of incandescent gaslamps for both arc and incandescent electric lights goes on apace in London. Its progress in London city itself I recently mentioned, the London Corporation having practically re-established gas everywhere that their control exists. Apparently the adjacent city of Westminster is coming into line ; the electric-light standards recently erected along Waterloo Bridge at the cost of some considerable injury to the granite balustrade of that splendid work —the finest of its class in the world —are all being removed, incandescent gas-lamps being substituted. So, too, the North London-Railway Company have decided to employ the same means of lighting for their terminus in Broadstreet. What with this new extension of gas-lighting and the rapid spread of gas stoves, both for heating and for cooking, it certainly does look as if the holders of gas shares were likely to ‘come into their own’ to a very profitable and agreeable tune.”
