BOWLING.

(By

“The Skip.”)

Most perfect weather favoured bowlers on Saturday last, and advantage was taken by some of the clubs tn reach the final stages in matches, while old and young made a point of getting to the rinks lest the weather fhould break and not present such another favourable opportunity the season closed.

The following trophy games have been posted at the various greens.-

Fletcher (president) made no race of it in the final for the Carlton Championship Singles, beating Holmes somewhat easily by 26 to 15. The winner is one of the most popular players on the Carlton green, and I am sure all will congratulate him on having his name on the champion board, as does yours truly, the “ Skip.”

The final of the Championship Singles at Grey Lynn was played off last week between R. Waite and J. Burfoot (best two out of three games). The first-mentioned won by 22, 22, to 16, 11. The game was well contested throughout, but in the finer points of play the winner displayed a wider experience in “ placing” and “ wresting.”

Some half-dozen members of Ponsonby green paid a visit to Carlton on Saturday and spent a pleasant afternoon.

Carlton are contemplating a scheme for more effectually draining the large green during the winter months.

Eagleton (North Shore) visited Mount Eden last Saturday with a team to try conclusions with T. McGregor, who had paid the marine suburb a similar compliment last week. The result was a very interesting and closely-contested game, but Mac. had again to cry content with second place.

The veterans’ match at the Auckland green has been annexed by A. W. Thompson (an ex-president of the club), one of the most genial and gentlemanly players it is possible to have a “ roll up” with. Congratulations.

The officers’ trophy of the Onehunga Club is nearing its finality. It appears as though E. B. Wright and S. Bradley are to fight out the finish as we go to press this (Wednesday) afternoon.

J. Jacobs, who has shown great promise throughout the season, won the First-year Players’ trophy at Auckland screen, defeating Carminer in the final.

The final for Skeates Bros. Cup at Waitemata green was fought out between President Geo. Fraser and S. Kinnaird, the latter just getting home by a 2 points majority. The contest throughout for this valuable cup given by Messrs. Skeates has lent a good deal of stimulus to the game at Birkenhead, and has had the effect of breaking the new members who had never bowled before into the rudiments of the game.

Rocky Nook have unearthed a novice of no mean order in Everett, who won the First-year Players’ Singles of his club by 25 to 6 against Thorpe. The last-mentioned player is no duffer, for he accounted for Shove in the semi-final to the tune of 25 to 8, and yet could make no race of it with Everett. Who did George train?

Mount Eden close down on Saturday, May 26. When and where are the championship singles and handicap singles to be played off?

M. McCallum has won the final of the president’s match at Carlton. Monty has been in particularly good form this season, and it was no surprise to see him figure in the trophy list.

The Championship Singles and Fours of the Rocky Nook green are expected to reach the finals this week.

The Waitemata green is now closed for top-dressing, etc. Green Superintendent Jackson says a new pavilion will grace the lawn at its opening next season.

On Saturday next the members of the Mount Eden Club will be asked to express their opinion as to the advisability or otherwise of havingrinks open for play on fine Saturday afternoons during the coming winter.

The game of bowls has become extremely popular in Sydney and its suburbs (says the Sydney “Mail”), and there is great rivalry among the numerous clubs for “ pride of place.” The individual championship this season was gained by Mr. G. A. Chapman, of the Chatswood Club, who won from a strpng field, which included such skilful bowlers as Messrs. Hale (runner-up), Moses, Harris, Howe, Moran, Carrie, Law, Bradbury, Strong, and others. Mr. Chapman is quite a young bowler, as he played his first game in 1904. He has won several trophies at the Chatswood Club, and he has played in inter-State matches on six occasions. In his championship matches he scored 186 points to 100. At Easter there is always a great gathering of bowlers in Sydney, as matches are then played by New South Wales against Victoria and Queensland. Taking advantage of the occasion, the Waverley Club each Easter conducts a grand bowling carnival, which includes a series of contests for the Australasian bowling championship. For this high honour 91 players competed on the Waverley green. After a severe struggle Mr. B. Hale, of the City Club, was successful. Among the defeated were a number of the best players in this State and in Victoria. Mr. Hale scored in the aggregate 51 points more than his opponents. He started bowls with the Canterbury Club, New

Zealand, and won two rink championships, and “skipped” for 13 years. His wins in New Zealand include the Australasian championship at Dunedin in 1889. Coming to Sydney Mr. Hale joined the City Club in 1896. Twice he secured the championship of that club, and was thrice runnerup. He was second to Mr. Chapman in the State championship, but turned the tables on him soon after in the Australasian championship at Waverley.
