Our Illustrations.
Among the illustrations appearing in this issue will be found two giving a good idea of the trades’ procession passing up Queen-street on Labour Day. It was generally considered that this annual demonstration was more successful this year than on any former occasion. The Otahuhu Racing Club took advantage of Labour Day to hold the annual sports meeting, which were well attended. Snapshots taken on the race track at Otahuhu should prove of interest. A picture of Douche, who won the Napier Park R.C. Handicap is also shown.
The summer is almost upon us, and the large yacht-loving section of Aucklanders are already beginning to wish themselves afloat. All the beaches where the yachts have been hauled up for winter quarters are veritable hives of industry just now, as may be seen by two of the pictures shown, on another page. As usual, we give many interesting dramatic portraits. Among these will be found a handsome picture of Miss Lily Cole, a charming burlesque actress who has just arrived from the Old Country to fulfil an engagement with Fuller’s Entertainers. Miss Adelina Martinengo, the talented violiniste with the Brescians, has made herself very popular with the large audiences which have thronged His Majesty’s during the company’s season, so that a portrait of her should meet with appreciation. Another picture is that of Miss Viola Price, -whose exceedingly clever dancing has earned nightly rounds of applause from Opera House patrons. At the same place of entertainment Mr. Scott does good work as a sketch artist, and he appears in our portrait gallery.
