Sporting & Dramatic REVIEW AND Licensed Victuallers' Gazette. With which is incorporated the Weekly Standard Thursday, September 28, 1905. THE PROGRAMME OF THE AUCKEAND RACING CLUB

The season’s programme for the Auckland Racing Club has made its appearance, and has been scanned with interest by owners. It was, of course, quite certain that owing to the recent defalcations in the office a reduction in the stake money would have to be made, and to this method of retrenchment the committee have had most reluctantly to consent. The cutting down of the money has, however, been done with a very sparing hand, as will be seen when it is stated that the sums allotted for the different meetings are as follows: — Spring, £3520; summer, £8700; autumn, £4835; winter, £3BOO. This makes the substantial total of £20,855 to be given during the season, an amount which even the most carping of owners cannot possibly cavil at. The event with which we have most immediate concern is the approaching spring meeting. This takes place on Saturday, Thursday (King s Birthday), and Saturday, November 4,9, and 11. On the opening day the events to be decided are the President’s Handicap, one mile; Great Northern Guineas, one mile; Welcome * stakes, five furlongs; Manukau Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters; Shorts Handicap, five furlongs; City Handicap, one mile and a-quarter; Pony Handicap, seven furlongs; and Flying Handicap, six furlongs. On the second day there will be the Spring Handicap, seven furlongs; Penrose Hurdles, two miles; Musket Stakes, four furlongs; Birthday Handicap, one mile and a-half; Onehunga Steeplechase, three miles; Maiden Plate, one mile and a-quarter; Pony Handicap, six furlongs; and Epsom Handicap, six furlongs. The list for the third day includes the Hunt Club Cup, three miles and a-half; Maiden Hurdles, one mile and a-half; Ascot Handicap, one mile and a-quarter; Juvenile Handicap, four furlongs; Pony Handicap, seven furlongs; Parnell Handicap, six furlongs; Welter Handicap, one mile; and Hunt Club Hurdles, two* miles. Entries for the Manukau Hurdles, City Handicap, and Birthday Handicap close on Friday, September 29, by nine p.m. General entries are due on Friday, October 20. Much interest will also centre in the entries for the big events to be run at the Summer Meeting. These are the Auckland Cup of 1350sovs, two miles; the Railway Handicap of 375sovs, six furlongs; the Summer Cup of 450sovs, one mile and a-quarter; the A.R.C. Handicap of 700sovs, one mile and a-half; and the Auckland Steeplechase of 300sovs, three miles and a-half. The time for the closing of these entries is to-morrow evening, so that there should be no lack of work at the A.R.C. office on that occasion. The list of horses engaged is. certain to be a very large one.
