HAWKE’S BAY.

Napier, September 25. A number of horses were out before breakfast on Saturday morning at Hastings, and favoured by gjod tracks and mild weather, Melodeon, Starshoot, and Splendid Idea each did useful gallops J<< Chamberlain ana Electric Gun were responsible for a. sound working gallop. Bex air left six furlongs behind in a satisfadcry manner. Diwli. wl o appears to be getting back te last seism’s form, strode over a circuit at top. After breakfast Merry wing was the first to commence business, carrying a feather-weight, she sprinted five furlongs very smartly. Cinque and Lady Raven, who are now’ in charge of J. Lawry, were allotted useful half-pace exercise. Hipporofla beat Probable at the end of six lurlongs, Scotch Reef, who also started, whipping in. Waipunehu. Mecca, and Lord Rosebery shaped in a business-like manner over th ee furlongs, the trio finishing together.. British Navy, Matapiro, and Cavill were associated in a circuit over the hurdles. The big Torpedo colt had all the best of the go. He carried away the last fence, but jumped the other four perfectly. Matapiro, who ran second, appears to be improving, while Cavill w r as hopelessly out of the hunt. Monarque beat Taura and Inspan very easily over three-quar-ters of a mile. Waimotu was given a couple of rounds at a useful pace. Mungiata, Land o’ Nod, Newcastle, Flower Girl, Iceland, and Martyrfelt received a lesson at the barrier, and after being jumped off a couple of times, ran home five furlongs in company. Flower had her nose in front of Miingista at the finish, but the former was the more vigorously ridden. Martyrfelt was third, and the three others running green close behind.

Mahutonga, Mystification, and Polyanthus ran the best allop of the morning. Starting from the mile and aquarter post the three raced together for a circuit, when Polyanthus was. slowed down. Mahutonga and Mystification ran out the full distance, the oig horse holding his companion safe at the finish. The times, both for once round and a mile and a-quarter, were very fast, and the trio were close together at the eu i of the circuit, that each may be said to have done most satisfactorily. Little Mary had the best of Pluck over three furlongs on the course proper. Operetta was restricted to steady work. Haukeria and Gosling were stretched out over seven furlongs. The former seems to have a wind affliction, which interferes with his efforts. The recent winds have dried the racecourse up wonderfully, and the vracks are now in perfect order. The plough gallop is very fast, and the grass track, which has been well looked after during the winter, is almost as good to gallop on as the course proper. Sir Geo. Clifford has hooked four horse boxes at the Pacific Hotel a'des, and Prosser has engaged accommodation for five horses at the same place. The new totalisator recently obtained by the Napier Park Racing Club, and which will be used for the first time at the spring meeting of the club next month, will be worked by the staff employed by the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club in connection with the handling of this improved machine. Mungista is the name that has been chosen by Mr. George Hunter for the two-year-old sister to Rubia, Rose Madder, and Madrigal. Additional foalings at Te Mahanga are: —Lady Bevys (Sir Bevys—Rugeley), a colt to San Fran.

The half-brother to Armistice by San Fran, that made its appearance at Te

Mahanga last week, only survived his birth a few days, as unfortunately he had been prematurely foaled.
