HAWKES BAY. 7"\ THE LATE MR JOHN BENNETT — MR DONNELLY’S HORSES -NOBILITY e HAWKE’S BAY BACKERS AND THE NATIONAL ME tsTING-FOALINGS-REOORD REIGN GOSSIP. Napier,' August 21. Last week Mr John Bennett, a and reap cted resident of this district passed away. The deceased gentleman was associated with the Napier Park Racing Club since its formation, and up to quite recently had filled the judge’s box at the fixtures of the Club. He whs a quiet unassuming spurt, but was full of sound logical, reasoning, and his demise will be keenly felt by the Napier Park Racing Club, and a "legion of sportsman who numbered him among their acquaintances ' Mr G. P. Donnelly has a team of half a-dozen horses undergoing a preparation at Crissoge, under the mentorship of J. Munn. The siring consists of Kahanuai and Autaia, who are engaged in the Ne v Zealand Cup, Garda, Oingo, Balmy, and a four year-old gelding by Kaiwhakfi out. of Pearl. . ' Mr Donnelly has accepted tenders for the building of boxes for’his horses at Ngatanui, and immediately upon their completion Munn will shill his charges to their new abode, where a first-class track in all weathers is procurable. Mr E. J. Watt’s New Zealand Cup horse, Nobility, is striding along in hie tasks, and IJmile, gallops, and 1 be way fie ( revels in his work beats ample proof that his trainer is missing T iio chances with St Leger’e son in the way of pre-
S .ration. Other this educator’s team, rade, Palaver, and the Shannon have| been answering solidly the questions asked of them lately. . Torpiaa, Coeir de Lion, and Proverb were well backed locally on Saturday, for their wins at Riccarton, and several, Lhe Guard and Record Reign doubles, were backed in this district, though not tor very large amounts. A cjuple of Percy Martin’s charges, Tire and Parasite, are to be sent to Mr Gollan’s estate, Mangatarata, this week, for a spell. At the Te Mahanga stud, Parlour Maid by Mute—Maid of all Work, has produced a fillly to Torpedo, and Maude, by St Leger —Hilda, a colt to Quilt. Record Reign’s brilliant performances at Riccarton last week must have galled the Hawke s Bay sports who let Castor’s son slip through their hands Mr R. H. Skipwith, the local trainer who owned St Simon, the half-brother to Record Reign, had the first refusal of the gelding in the early stages of his career, but unluckily for him no deal eventuated.
Influenza has made its appearance amongst some of the horse trained at Hastings, and with the Waipawa Hawke’s Bay and Napier Park Meetings looming up in the near future, they feel anything but pleased at the advent of this pestilence. A tew weeks ago Gold Chain, the full-brother to Gold Link, got entangled in a wire fence on his owner’s property at Porangahau, but fortunately a rest has removed all the effects of his accident. He shortly joins T. Jones’s team at Hastings. Boreas, the half-brother of Strenuous and Borax, is engaged in hack duties on a station in the Porangahau district, and his owner intends to give him a'chance by displaying his ability at some of the country meetings in this district.
