The portrait of Miss Hardinge, promised last week, appears in this issue. Miss Hardinge is the accomplished and talented pianiste who is travelling with Mdlle. Trebelli on her Australasian tour. The brilliance of Miss Hardinge’s playing was a theme of admiration during the Auckland season of the celebrated prima donna. Another picture of interest to theatrical people is the portrait group of the Spanish dancers in Pollard’s representation of ” Paul Jones.” Tom Sullivan, the New Zealand sculler who recently triumphed over William Haines very easily, has been rowing for some years now, and during his career has met with a fair amount of success; his victory over Haines was a brilliant one. George Towns beat William Barry for the championship of England and The Sportsman Challenge Cup on May 1. For two thirds of the four miles and a quarter course the contest was anybody’s race; at a little over three miles and a half Towns had the measure of his man, and there is no doubt he possesses stamina rather than superior, pace. Barry was favorite at 5 to 2 on, I but he failed to stay. Mr R. Platt’s horse Castashore has been the winner of numerous races during the season now closing His latest victory was at the Hawke’s Bay J.C. Winter Meeting. The portrait of Jack Rae—to whom “ Atlas” pays tribute—appears under the heading of “ Well-known Jockeys.”
