FUNERAL OF MR W. DOUGLAS.
The burial of the late Mr W. Douglas took place on Saturday. A large number of horsemen and occupants of wheeled conveyances assembled at Te Mahanga to pay their last tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased settler and sportsman. Just after noon the Rev. Mr Whyte held a service at the homestead, and shortly afterwards the cortege wended its way to the Havelock cemetery, where are buried several children w.ho have preceded their sire. Throughout the line of march the procession was considerably strengthened by the inclusion of residents of the country from near an I far, and by the time the procession had reached Havelock it must have been quite a mile.long. From all parts of the land sympathetic telegrams were received, and distant friends in Australia sent cablegram l expressing their regret at the demise of the laird of Te Mahanga. All the horses that have been nominated in New Zealand and Aust alia in Mr Douglas’ name have been scratched. —Napier correspondent.
