CANTERBURY.

Death of Boulanger-Sandhurst-Mauser’s running’ — Djin-Djin —Mr G- G. Stead and the Middle Park Plate.

ChristoßUßCH, February 22. I have to report the death of old Boulanger, who died a few days ago. Boulanger won numerous races a few years ago while the property of Mr J. Paul.

The English imported colt, Sandhurst, by Bendigo—Engagement, ran in two races at the summer meeting, but cut a very inglorious figure. He ran in the colors of Mr G. G. Stead, and although he had had plenty of work and was in capable hands, I am inclined to dub him no good. He did not give me the impression that he would make a racehorse, however good he may turn out at the stud, The stewards considered the running of Mauser in the Linwood Welter on the second day and the Craven Plate on the first day, but they found no cause entitling them to take action. The running of this horse has been the subject of investigation by the stewards on former occasions.

Djin-Djin, who won two races for two-year-olds, was in fine fettle, thanks to E. Cutts, who has not had the best of luck with his horses lately. Djin-Djin is partly owned by Mr Tom Pollard, of operatic fame. While the company was playing in Christchurch, Djin-Djin, who is called after the opera of that name, assisted to increase the receipts of some members of the company, who plumped strongly for the daughter of Apremont in both her engagements. Mr G. G. Stead has now won the Middle Park Plate four times in succession, Bloodshot in 1895-96, Gold Medallist in ’97, and Conqueror this year. He has bred four winners of this race —Strowan, Bloodshot, Gold Medallist, and Conqueror.
