WANGANUI.

June 6. Leita, dam of the grey gelding Musket, was sold by public auction last week, being purchased by Mr H. Morrow, of the Criterion Hotel. Ben Varrey (Vanguard—Caller Herrin) is now located in Mr D. Knight’s stable at Hawera. This filly should show to good advantage next season as she has already proved that she is possessed of a good turn of pace. The Newmarket Stables which is under Harry Pell’s supervision, has just added another string to its bow in the shape of a rising three year old half-sister to the champion ex-hack, Irish Twist, by Gipsy King. Charley Woodley has shifted from his old quarters to some excellent boxes in Harrison-street, where he has in hand Kai-Iwi-Lady and the two year old filly Famous, by Natator —Fame. Kapua was scratched for all engagements at the late Wanganui meeting owing to persistently refusing to jump any fences whilst schooling a few mornings prior to the races. He was to have been ridden by George Hope.

Gold Cup (Ascot —Caller Herrin), who has ran very consistently during the past season, has been purchased by Mr B. Coyle for the sum of £3O, at which figure the daughter of Ascot is a really cheap bargain and no doubt will soon return her purchase money. Stray shot, who took part at your National Meeting last week, will, I hear, be sold should a reasonable figure be offered for her. The old Commercial stables, lately occupied bv C. Woodley, have been taken over by Messrs. J. Porter and G Chamberlain. During the winter the racehorses Cheque, Sea Breeze, and a half brother to Swift, the hack mare, who are trained by W. Fergus, will be wintered there, and will undergo their preparations for Spring engagements. Since Irish Twist’s victory in the Winter Oats, punters on this coast are al ready beginning to talk about the son of Ingomar’s chance for the New Zealand Cup. If he keeps sound until the post is reached he is sure to carry a lot of local money.
