CYCLING.

Surman is training steadily on the Domain track; and may be expected to give a good account of himself at Napier when the time comes.

Pilkington, our other representative, is said to be putting in a lot of work on a private track at Panmure. Report says he is making good progress, though his knee is a great drawback. A. Coubrough, who has been training with a view to participating in the ’Cycle events at the Championship Meeting, will have to give up all hopes of going to Napier, as he has to go into the country almost immediately. Some say he is the best man over a quarter mile Auckland has ever seen, and this being so, I am sorry he cannot compete, though for my own part I can hardly take such an elevated view of Coborough’s capabilities on the machine.

The London Sportsman speaking of Mr Dennison’s patent exhibited at the National ’Cycle Show held at the Crystal Palace in December says : —Up till now we have not had an opportunity of calling attention to several novelties. One of these is the Maori cycle, the invention of Mr Dennison, C.E, of Christchurch, New Zealand. Geared up to 150, and with a hand-lever arrangement as well as foot action, it is stated to have attained a speed of 27 miles an hour. The wheel case is very lengthy, and altogether the machine presents an extraordinary appearance. J. Boyd, H. A. Soames, and A. R. Barker of the ’Cycling Club will go across to Sydney towards the end of

February with a view to competing at the big ’Cycle meeting to be held in that city in March. The trio should.give a good account of themselves if the handicappers do not overrate them.

The governing body of the cash-prize system, the New Zealand ’Cyclists Union, have under consideration the question of giving certificates to members who break the Union Standard.

Under the direction of W. J. Walford, Zimmerman and Wheeler will make their racing trip through Australia and New Zealand early in ’96. The fifty mile championship of Wellington eventuates on Saturday next. No less than fourteen American racing men have covered a mile under two minutes, six having done it inside 1 min. 53 sec., two under 1 mm. 51 sec., and two under 1 min. 50 sec.

The American Tyler has reduced the mile record to 1 min. 48 3-5 sec. “ Philibuster ” in the Australasian speaks of a new invention which will enable bicycles to be driven at twice the present speed with no more exertion. The invention which emanates from a Melbourne engineer, has been patented all over the world, and will shortly be placed before the public.
