WELLINGTON.

August 17. For the last few months it has been understood in sporting circles that Loyalty’s full brother Saracen was bound for Australia, and his name appearing in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup acceptances confirmed that opinion. However, it would appear by the sound support Saracen received here during the week that his owner has decided to endeavour to capture the New Zealand Cup prize. The commission in Saracen’s favour was neatly worked, and /1050 was obtained at prices ranging from too to 4 to 100 to 6, the average price being 100 to 5. There was a disposition on the part of the commissioner to go on at 100 to 6, but no more money was available at that price. A meeting of the committee of the Manawatu Racing Club was held at Palmerston on Tuesday. It was decided

to ask Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., to convene a meeting of country delegates at a central place, say Marton, to discuss questions relating to the Gaming Bill and the formation of a New Zealand Jockey Club. The appointment of a stipendiary steward was disapproved. Messrs R. S. Abraham, D. Pringle, and J. H. Hankins were appointed to interview the Borough Council with regard to river protection works, and were empowered to authorise the advance of /100 against rent for that purpose. The programme for the annual summer meeting at Christmas time was drawn up. It was decided to give /noo in stakes as against /'B7O last year. The events are as follows : —First day: Telegraph Stakes, 7 furlongs, /'So; Handicap Hurdles,, /60; Hack Hurdles, /40 ; Palmerston Cup, miles, £300; Hack Flat, ij miles, /40; Grandstand Handicap, one mile, £73 ; Ladies’ Bracelet, /jSSecond day: Summer Handicap, 6 furlongs, /70 ; Handicap Hurdles, /50; Hack Hurdles, /40 ; Flying Hack Handicap, /4.0; President’s Handicap, one mile one furlong, /zoo ; Christmas Hack Handicap, /30 ; Farewell Handicap, once round, /40. Mr C. H. Chavannes, the popular Wanganui boniface, and late starter for the Wanganui J.C., left in the Waihora on a holiday trip to Australia. He will be away about six weeks, and intends being present at the A.J.C. Spring Meeting.
