JOTTINGS FROM WELLINGTON.

(By

Proteus.)

Wellington, March 11. Those persons engaged in canvassing for subscriptions to defray the cost of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic team’s visit Home, report favourably. Last week £l5O had been collected. This amount will be supplemented by £lO from the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, and a donation of £5 from the Caledonian Society. There are also several small lists to come in, which are expected to bring in a handsome sum.

The Lyttelton yacht Mascotte, winner of the championship for first-class yachts at the Wellington Anniversary Regatta held on January 22, has been offered to a Wellington syndicate for £450. The syndicate decline to accede to the terms, which are the same as proposed by them while the yacht was in Wellington harbour, and which were not satisfactory for the owner of the Mascotte.

A GREAT deal of interest was evinced in the cricket match Mr. Bentley’s Company v. Inshrance The Theatricals wOre first to bat, and were deposed of for 97 runs. Greenaway (24), Money (17), and Foster (11), were the top scbrers. The Insurance team made 129. V. Waters (38), and C. Pearce (23), not out, were thd principal contributors for the Insurance team. In the second innings of the Theatricals they ran Up 118. Foster (45), Greenaway (28), and Campbell (15), were the most conspicuous with the b&t. Frank Ashbolt was very successful with the leather, he doing the “hat trick” in the second innings of the Theatricals, while Foster, Alderson and Whelan were the most successful trundlers for the stage profession. A. noticeable feature of the game was the excellent fielding of the Theatricals who, notwithstanding being out of practice, showed great efficiency in that department of the game. Messrs. Hislop and Co. have finished the silver medals ordered by Mr. R. Brown, of Glasgow. Mr. Brown intends presenting each member of the team winning the beautiful silver shield presented by him to the Association’s Football Clubs throughout New Zealand with a medal. The medals have a beautiful gold centre with the monogram of the Football Association, and underneath is the motto “ Floreat Majestas.”

At a general meeting of the Star Boating Club held last Friday evening, March 11, the question of devoting a sum of money towards defraying the expenses of the athletic team that is to visit. England shortly was discussed. On the motion Mr. 11. D. Bell, seconded by Mr. Govett, it was agreed “ That the committee be authorised to pay as much as they decided towards the expenses of Messrs. Batger and Hempton.”

Mr. Walter Bentley has established a sort of relation with Wellington. He has lately bought seventy-four shares in the Wellington Opera House.
