WANGANUI STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

The Wanganui Jockey Club held their annual Steeplechase Meeting last Monday, when they were favoured with glorious weather and a large attendance, fully 2,000 people being present. The racing right through was very close, some good finishes resulting. Although spills were the order of the day, no serious accidents occurred, though some riders were badly shaken; Messrs. Hill and Poole worked the totalisators, and passed £3,648 through the machines during the day. Appended are the full results: — Flying Handicap of 45 sovs., 6 furlongs. 102 Mr. T>. Knight’s b m Weka, syrs, Bst 101 b, Reid + ■65 Mr. W. Gibson’s b g Montrose, 4yrs,'7st 121 b, Holmes + 111 Mr E F. Yuile’s b g St. Malo, 4yrs, Bst, McCormick 3 89 Pyramus, 31 Torpedo, 75 Fleta, 44 Rufus, 10 Petroleum, and 88 She, also ran.. A good start was effected, of which Rufus was the first to take the lead, but a quarter of a mile from home, Montrose went to the front, and although St. Malo and Weka came with a great rush, Weka could only succeed in making a dead heat, St. Malo a length off third. The first time past the stand Takapu led, followed by Whalebone, Ingarangi and Jupiter in that order / but at the first stone-wall Whalebone fell, and Jupiter ran into second place, in 'Which didder they passed the second time. At thb b&sk stretch Jupiter ran up to Takapu, and they raced neck and neck for a while, when Jiipiter dtew away, but took the wrong course. Instead of‘going out through the trees he came Eilbiig'.the course proper, being followed by Takapu. Ingarangi was then left in command df Dangerous and Matchless. At the spar in the straight Ingarangi was a length abbad ’of Dangerous, which he maintained to the finish, Matchless finishing a dozen lengths behind Time, 6 min. 42| secs. Te Ata led to the spar in the straight, where he ran off, leaving Cable with the lead, Yardman being second, but he fell at the first stonewall, which left Cable and Piako to fight it out. Cable maintained his lead, and won by two lengths. Tims, 4 min. 43j secs. Dividend, £9 ss. Winthb Oats of 85 sovs., 1J miles. 65 Mr. W. Gibson’s b g Montrose, 4yrs, Bst 81b, W. Holmes 1 22 Mr. R. E. Mcßae’s b g Torpedo, 4yrs, 7st 91b, Ryder 2 227 Mr E. F. Yuile’s b g St. Malo, 4yrs, 7st 101 b, McCormick 3 i |lBl Pyramus, 103 Weka, 40 Oaklands, 4 Rufus, and 8 She, also ran. Rufus and Oaklands led for a mile, when Torpedo came through his horses and looked all over a winner. He led until the distance post was reached, when Holmes made a move on Montrose, who answered gamely, and despite the desperate riding of the others, ran home a dinner by a length, the win being a popular one. Time, 2 min. 42|sec. Dividend, £8 6s. Trial Steeplechase of 50 sovs., two miles. 74 Mr. Burke’s br g Yardman, aged, 9st 91b, Wright 1 149 Mr. C. A. Durie’s b g Christmas, lOst 71b, Colello 2 118 Mr. D. Cameron’s br g Ridge, aged, 9st 91b, Cameron 8 46 Karewa and 30 Gentle Annie also started.- ./ Yardman took the lead soon after the start, and maintained it all the way, winning by a couple of lengths. Time, 4 min. 41 sec. Dividend, £& Is.

Hack Flat of 25 sovs., 1 mile and a distance. 50 Mr. T. 8. Bristol’s o g Norton, syrs, 6st 51b, Price 1 84 Mr. J. G. Wilson’s Hiamoe, 4yrs, 9st, McCormick 4 38 Mr. R. Ross’br g Strike, 4yrs, 7st 51b, Collelo ■••■•••••• » IQ6 Waihi, 152 Despised, 8 Corsair, 25 Javelin, 21 Viola, and 13 Attache, also started.

Hiamoe led all the way until half way up the straight, when Norton came with a wet sail and won by half a length. Time, 2 min. 5 sec. Dividend, £8 18s.

Final Handicap Steeplechase of 40 sovs., about 1J miles. 78 Mr. H. H. Hayr’s chgTakapu, aged, lOst, J. Hickey...... 1 140 Mr. R. E. Mcßae’s br g Whalebone, 4yrs. 9st 121 b, Wnght 2 22 Mr. D. Thurston’s c g Dangerous, aged, 9st 101 b, Cameron 3 43 Te Ata and 79 Waterbury also ran. Waterbury fell at spar in the straight and Te Ata ran off at the stone-wall. Takapu led all the way and won easily, jumping beautifully. Time, 3 min. 3lf sec. Dividend, £4 3s.

Jupiter has been purchased by Mr. D. Munn of Napier on behalf of Capt. Russell, the price being a little over £2OO. Norton, the winner of the hack race at the Wanganui meeting, is a half-brother to Camomile (who was well known down that way), being by Ascot—Romp.
