Lord Russell, Lord Chief .1 imtico of England, who died recently while undergoing an operation, was one of the most able men who have ever held this position. He was a powerful and brilliant speaker, and his forensic abilities wero acknowledged to bo unequalled. He commenced his Parliamentary career in 1880, and wrh appointed successively Attorney- General, Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and Lord Chief Justice, besides receiving knighthood, the K.C.M.G-., and a life peerage for services rendered on various occasions. Ah an example of the price paid in London for Maori carvings, we may quote the following :— Twelvo carvings from a Maori store house brought forty guineas ; two carved ridge polo ends, representing human figures, twenty guineas; two carved posts from a Wharepuni, twentytwo and a-half guineas. In the report of the sale given in the Times, " wharo " is the word used, and its meaning is given as Council Chamber, Recent events in the world's history will cause a very lar^e increase in emigration from the Old Country during the next few

years. South Africa will, doubtless, claim the first attention from adventurous young men, who wish for wider opportunities than they can obtain at home, and tlie woMer is there are not more of them. The fact that Australian Bushmen and New Zealand Rough Eiders hare proved so convincingly the sort of stuff men grow into in the salubrious climate and room surroundings of the colonies, will, no doubt, turn the attention of many, who prefer a more settled country, to Australia or New Zealand. A few' months fighting in the Transvaal has done more to advertise these colonies than anything else since their foundation.
