Coming Tournaments. interprovincial .teams tournament—April 5, u and 8 (Easter), at Auckland. Ladies Pennant Championship. ST. JOHN’S THE WINNERS. FTER two determined efforts last ■ I season to win the pennant iu ij A the first and final rounds < Khandallali and Johnsonville being their opponents), the St. John’s representatives have at last had their efforts crowned with success. On Saturday they defeated Brougham Hill in the final by 4 rubbers to 2, 37 games to 28— Miss Tavendale v. Miss Buchan, 7—3; Miss Pullman v. Miss Gray, 7—6; Miss Clyde v. Miss Pearson, 6—7; Miss Hill v. Miss Bowley, 7—4; Misses Tavendale and Pullman v. Misses Buchan and Gray,

T < leaves for Sydney On Bth March, having been transferred to the head oflice of tike Norwich Union Insurance Co. for six months' special experience. after which he returns to Wellington. It is not likely that Mr G. A. Hurley will l»e successful at the next meeting of the X.Z.L.T.A. with his motion to restrict the venue of the annual championship meeting to Auckland. Wellington, Chiistchun li. and Dunedin. Provinces strong in able players. Hawke’s Bay for in<tancv. would suffer an injustice were

the motion carried, a* Hastings TflWt.iably sends a contingent of competitors to the N.Z. Championships. Yet it is proposed to deprive tiie Hawke's Bay Province of the right to hold the meeting at Napier or Hastings even once in many years, while Otago, whose representatives are conspicuous by their absence, is, according to Mr Hurley, entitled to the. honour of conducting the big tournament once in every four years. Surely the financial aspect cannot be the only ona Connected with the N.Z. championships and tennis generally. There is ample Toom for development in many of the growing and smaller centres, but the policy of the N.Z.L.T.A will be fatal if it attempts to crush the smaller associations instead of encouraging them by the delegation of the annual championships to their district. Marlborough is a case in point—there is no doubt that tl’.e revival of lawn tennis in Blenheim is due to the holding of the 1910 N.Z. tournament there. It is easily the turn of Hastings for the next meeting at Christmas, and the Hawke’s Bay people can rest assured that Wellington will not support Mr Hurley’s motion, its delegates having been requested to vote against it. The final of the Wellington Ladies’ Pennant Competition was down for decision at Day's Bay last Saturday, and it is probable that Kilbirnie and Trinity Church will do battle this week for honours in the same jjrade of the men’s competition. -fg
