WHAT THE NORTHERN CITY MIGHT BE IN YEARS TO COME IF THE FOUNDATION WAS LAID NOW FOR THE CREATION OF A TOWN SQUARE FACING THE NEW TOWN HALL. At his lantern lecture on "T own Planning" in Auckland on Friday, the editor of the “Weekly Graphic" (Mr. Charles C. Reade) submitted the above sketch by way of suggestion for the creat of a central square in the vicinity of Auckland’s new Town Hall. The Idea for improving the approach to the new building originally came from Mr Arthur Myers, M.P. A glance at the plan on the left renders the explanation of the picture simple. The land on the right is already city property, and when the leases fall in the present buildings will disappear to make room for the new ty markets. The City Engineer has propounded a scheme for acquiring the large block on the left, and so get rid of a lot of insanitary property existing behind these shops. "Now, supposing." said the lecturer, "the Auckland City Council took the long view of these proposals and adopted the engineer’s scheme. With land available on both sides of the Town Hall, the opportunity and for creating a large central square in the very heart of the city. This picture shows what Auckland might become in future years if the city laid the foundations for the scheme now by acquiring the necessary land ... Instead of the proportions and design of a fine building being marred by ugly surroundings, here in time would be something like architectural harmony hand and with a generous open space, around which are grouped some of the leading buildings of the city This place on the left let, let us say, is the City Art Gallery, with the municipal theatre adjoining, whilst on the right the city markets. I do not suggest, of course, the architectural features employed here for the sake of effect should be adopted, but simply that the time for Auckland ook ahead is now, and see whether some far-seeing civic improvement such as this sketch suggests could not be inaugurated with our new Town Hall as a first step towards making Auckland worthy of its position as the pr er city of the Dominion.”
