August 12. Tlie Hospital Ball. Tlie Hospital Ball was held in the Garrison Hall on Thursday evening, ami proved! a great success. The hall was beautifully decorated with bamboo and branches of cherry blossom, with long streamers of white and yellow drapery stretched from side to side. The Napier Horticultural Society. The Napier Horticultural Society held their- annual meeting on Tuesday afternoon. It was decided to hold a rose and sweet pea show some time in November. Sweet peas have become most popular flowers of late, and every season brings out more lovely varieties. Judging from the number of people cultivating sweet peas, the show in November should be a great success, andl encouragement to tne society. A bulb show will be held in St. Augustine’s Schoolroom on September 7th. These little shows have always been most popular. The daffodils promise to be very good this season, and with other early spring flowers should make a show well worth visiting. Hockey Dance.

The Napier Hockey Club gave a very successful dance in the Foresters’ Hall on Wednesday evening in aid of the Association fund for sending the ladies’ representative team to Nelson. A delicious supper was provided by the ladies. Extra dances were played by Aliss Ward-, Air. H. Wrim, and Air. H. Bobjohns. A Humber of country visitors were present. Personal. Air. and Airs. Absolam (Rissingtonfl have been spending a few days in town. Aliss Chapman left for- Christchurch on Thursday. She will remain there till after the Golf Championship. Aliss Alary Shirley is on a holiday visit to Napier. Airs. Henley, Airs. Geo. Kelly, Aliss Hindmarsh, and Aliss Hamlin leave for Christchurch this week to take part in the Golf Championship. Aliss Hartgill (Dannevirke) is visiting Napier. Airs. Duke Sheilds (The Toie) is staying at the Ala-sonic Hotel. Air. and Airs. Pollen have arrived from Auckland, and have taken a house in Sealey-road. Air. Pollen succeeds Air. Broderick as Commissioner of Crown Lands.
