PERSONAL NOTES.

Mrs. J. Masters, wife of the Mayor of Stratford, died suddenly while visiting a friend last week. Dr. Stuart, of Auckland, is at present on a visit to Queenstown, relieving Dr. Douglas, of the Wakatipu Hospital. Sergeant H. Patience, of tiie Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, has been appointed instructor and drum-major of the Napier City Band. Dr. J. M. Mason, formerly Chief Health Officer for New Zealand, returned from London by the lonic last week, which arrived at Wellington.—Press Association. The services of the late Captain C. B. Griffith to the Anglican Church at Orepuki have been commemorated by erection of a handsome memorial altar in St. Faith’s Church there. The local “Advocate” .states that the altar is the first one in any country church in Otago. Mr. Edward Butt, for many years with the Northern S.S. Co. at Thames, was presented last week with a purse of 40 sovereigns as a mark of respect and esteem. The purse was subscribed by representatives of the Company’s customers, payers of harbour dues, carters, cab proprietors, and others. Reference was made at the meeting of the Auckland Presbytery last week to the recent death of the Rev. T. AV. Runciman, who was the first minister of St. Stephen’s Church, Ponsouby, and a resolution was carried expressing regret at the death of the late veteran church worker, and expressing sympathy with the relatives in their deprivation. Mr and Mrs A. W. Holmes, of Rakaia, are on a visit to Auckland, stopping at the Central Hotel. Air Kayll, the prisons expert recently appointed by the Government, was referred to by Dr. Findlay in the Legislative Council as being “not only enthusiastic in his prisons work, but one of the best instructed criminologists among modern workers in that field.” Air William Henry, founder and present secretary of the Royal Life Saving Society, will tour Australia and New Zealand in the interests of the society next summer. He is due in New Zealand early in November, and will be prepared to give lectures, examine candidates for the society’s awards and generally do what he can to help forward the" lifesaving movement in the Dominion. Dean AlcKenna and the Rev. Colville were passengers on Friday from New Plymouth, on the Rarawa. Air. and Airs. T. S. Williams, of Auckland, returned from Sydney by the Moana, which arrived at AVellingtou on Wednesday. The friends of Air R. Humphries, wellknown in local musical circles, who has been in hospital seriously ill, will regret

to learn that his condition is precarious, says our Waihi correspondent. Air. C. Al. Oram, partner in the firm of Abbott, Oram and Co., warehousemen, arrived at Wellington by the Aloana from London, via Sydney, on Wednesday. Mr. Oram, who is a member of the London branch of the firm, is on his first visit to the Dominion.

Miss Anderson, Ph.B., of Adelaide, organising secretary for the Y.AV.C.A. of Australasia, will make a visit to Auckland shortly in the interests of the local association. Aliss Anderson has done very valuable work in every branch of the Young Women’s Christian Association’s activities, and is perhaps the ■best qualified person in Australasia to assist in furtherance of its objects. Air. H. Al. Smeeton handed in his resignation from membership of the Auckland City Council last week at the conclusion of meeting of Council. He has been a member of the Council for five years and a-half, and during that time has been one of the most active and hardworking of the ratepayers’ representatives. Now. he states that he is compelled, much against his wish, to relinquish his work on behalf of the city owing to pressure of private business. When the members met a.s usual in the Alayor’s room after the meeting, the Alayor (Air. L. J. Bagnall) expressed regret that Air. Smeeton had found it necessary to resign. Air. Smeeton had been one of the most useful of the members of the Council, and Air. Bagnall hoped that soon the retiring councillor might again find himself in a position to oiler his services to the .city, possibly in the capacity of mayor. Other members who expressed regret at the loss of Mr. Smeeton were Messrs. A. J. Entrican, C. J. Parr, W. A. Thompson, and J. Patterson. Mr. Smeeton, replying to the complimentary speeches, said that he had resigned only because he could no longer spare time to do justice to the work required of him as a councillor. The Rev. P. T. Williams, of Gisborne, left by the Tarawera on 'Saturday for Gisborne. Air Parry, president of the Aliners’ Union, left AA’aihi last week for Wellington, to attend the conference of the New Zealand Federation. — (Own correspondent ). Air. G. R. Hart, chief of staff of the Christchurch “Press,” with his wife and daughter, arrived ‘by the Alain Trunk express on Saturday on holiday, and is staying at the Royal Hotel. Air Robert Bell, proprietor of the Ashburton “Alail” and “Guardian,” who returned to Auckland from a week’s visit to AA’haugarei and district by the Ngapuhi last week, left again on Thursday for Helensville and other towns in the north of Auckland line. Alessrs. Canham, AVebb. Stanley, Sadler, and Castle, representing the Auckland AA'aterside AVorkers’ Union, left by the Alain Trunk express last week, en route for Christchurch, to attend the annual conference of the AA’aterside AA’orkers’ Federation. Air E. Carlisle Howard, of Nairn, Scotland, and Air AV. W. H. Edwards, of Hay, Hereford, members of the Royal College of A’eterinary Surgeons, who have been appointed to the veterinary division of the New Zealand Department of Agriculture, arrived from London by the lonic last week. The third veterinarian for New Zealand, selected out of fifty-nine applications, Air Richard Finch, arrived last week. Air. Hutchinson Garner, a resident of St. Helier’s Bay and Epsom of 40 years’ standing, passed away at Graftonroad last AA’ednesday, after a brief illness. Air. Garner was a son of the late Lieutenant-Colonel John Henry Garner, 72nd Regiment, of Garnervale, Belfast, Ireland. The deceased was a resident of the Cook Islands for many years, where he held the position of chief post-, master and collector of customs for some time, and contributed to the Auckland Press many interesting incidents of those beautiful islands, being a descriptive writer of no mean order. Dr. Percy T. Herring, M.D., F.R.C.P., Chandos Professor of Physiology in the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, arrived in Wellington on Wednesday by the lonic from London, on a holiday, visit to the Dominion. Dr. Herring received his earlier education at Christ’s College. Christchurch (New Zealand), and Otago University, thence proceeding to Edinburgh. lie was formerly lecturer in histology, and assistant to the Physiology Department, University of Edins burgh. He "was the Murchison Memorial scholar in clinical medicine in 1897, and Goodsir Memorial Fellow in anatomy and physiology in 1899. Dr. Herring was president of the Royal Afedical Society in 1898 99.
