HEWS FROM THE WATER (Special to “ Graphic.") FIXTURES. Jan. 19.—Fonsonby Kegatta Prize Night Jan. 22 — Royal New Zealand Yaeht Squadron Races Jan. 29.—Auckland Regatta. Jan. 29.—Hamilton Regatta. ¥HE weather on Saturday and Sunday last was the best that yachtsmen have experienced so far this season, and consequqently was taken full advantage of, nearly every boat available being afloat. The eastern end of the harbour on Saturday presented one of the prettiest pictures that I have seen on the Waitemata for some years past, with the great number of boats—sail and power —“on the job,” either racing or on pleasure bent. A subscriber has asked me why the balance-sheet of the Anniversary Regatta of 1909 has not been issued to the donors of prizes—cash and trophies. The prizes—cash and trophies—won at the Ponsonby Regatta of December 19 were paid over at the Leys Institute on Wednesday evening. There was a large attendance, and Mr. Thomas Peacock, ■who has been a constant supporter of the Club since its inception, presided. The Waitemata Model Yaeht Club held a social evening in their boathouse on St. Mary’s beach last week, at which there was a large attendance of members and their friends. The shed was nieely decorated for the occasion, and Mr. L. Braund and a committee welcomed the guests of the evening. Mr. Walter Bruee was the chairman. During the evening a number of toasts were proposed and responded to, and an excellent programme of songs and gramaphone selections rendered. I am pleased to see that the committee of the Anniversary Regatta, to be held on the Waitemata on January 29, have decided to place a race for the first-class yachts on the programme. Of course, we are all aware that it is not only a matter of finance, but this year some of the “crack” boats — Thelma, Ariki and Viking—are out of commission. Still, ■with what are left in “the running” there should be a good raee. The committee of the Anniversary Regatta are, I think, badly advised in not adhering to the "restricted class” of boats on their programme for this year. The rules have been thought and worked out by a few enthusiasts and adopted by the North Shore Yacht Club and the Ponsonby Sailing Club, and have always given the greatest of satisfaction to the competitors. However, I suppose that it is now too late to expect a reversal of the opinion of the committee on the matter, but I trust that next year the “restricted class'’ will be placed on the programme again. Probably wh’at has been one of the finest scenes in the Waitemata was off the end of Queen Street Wharf on Saturday afternoon, when the races in connection with the New Zealand Power Boat Association were in progress. The flagship anchored in mid-stream was literally surrounded at times by the fleet of power boats connected with the races, and some very interesting and exciting events took place during the afternoon. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron hold two races on Saturday—one for sailers and one for power boats. The former will be a cruising raee, and the latter a long distance race for the cup presented by Mr. W. C. Leys. It is expected that there will be good entries for both events. The North Shore Yacht Club hold an oeean race (100 miles) on Saturday for the Rudder Cup. The annual picnic of the Devon port Yacht Club will be held on February 12. Waitemata Dinghy Sailing Club. The Waitemata Dinghy Sailing Club hold races on Saturday afternoon over tiie usual course, Inrt only two boats started in Class A: Otiveen and She. The race was started in a light southerly

breeze, and Olrveen finished at 4h. 29m. 195.; She, 4h. 35m. 225. In Glass 8., Tuonui, Little Billy, and Fidget were the starters. They finished in that order, Tuonui being about lm. ahead of Little Billy, and Fidget 2Am. behind the second bout-. The next race will be sailed on Saturday afternoon next. Devonport Yacht Club. The Devonport Yacht Club held races on Saturday afternoon under very favourable conditions of wind and weather. The first was a cruising race to Waiwcra, aod the other for Classes A and B. There was a nice breeze from the southwest when the race started, changing into about &S.W., going towards Wbangapawa, when it changed a little more southerly. The finishes was:— Class A.: Waione, Kotiri, Ngatira, Victory. The corrected times make no difference in the result. Class B.: Celox, Eulafie, Sybil, Daisy, Iris, Ranee. The corrected times place Daasy first, Eulalie second, and Celox third. North Shore Yacht Club. The Nontli Shore Yacht Club held a series of interesting races on Saturday afternoon, the principal event being a cruising raee for a hamdsome cup presented by Mr. W. H. Ingram. There was a nice breeze from the south-west blowing during the afternoon, and a good contest took place between seven of the boats over the course of about 40 miles. The other races were for Classes V., VI., VII., and IX., from off Vicotria wharf to Takapuna Beac.li. The raced were started promptly to time, and the officials are to be congratulated upon the careful starting. There were some pretty sights during the afternoon from the large number of yachts, both sailers and motors afloat. The following are the details:— Cruising Race.—Entries and handicaps: Heartsease scr, Thistle 30m, Mahaki 30m, Wairiki 38m, Ronaki 38m, Calypso 45m, Mystery 55m, Rhona 55m, Glady 63m, Maroondah 63m, Gannett 75m, Tangaroa 80m, lolanthe 80m, Jack 85m, Maybelle 85m, Encounter 90m. All the entrants except Encounter facing the starter. Heartsease was soon in the lead, with Thistle and Mahaki in close attendance, the smaller boats soon being left behind. Spinnakers were soon out, Thistle and erew being the smartest in getting theirs out. As the course was covered, the wind fell exceedingly light, it being almost a calm at times, but afterwards shifting into the southward, blowing a fresh breeze. The race did not finish until dark, but the rear-commodore (Mr C. Garlick) has placed a good light on his yaeht at the finishing line, also lighting a large fire on the beaeh, which was a great assistance to the contestants in the raee. Tangaroa had a lot of bad luck, getting becalmed off Awaroa Bay for over an hour. Heartsease did not complete the course, anchoring off Cowes Bay. Thistle had the good luck to be able to make a good board right down the passage. The finishing times were: Thistle 8h 53m, Mahaki 9h 11m 455, Wairiki 9h I2m 355, Mystery Oh 35m. The New Zealand Power Boat Association held a series of raecs in the harbour on Saturday afternoon, which created considerable interest, not only amongst the competitors, but by a large number of onlookers along the wharves. The entries for all classes were very large, being much, above the usual number. The weather was perfect for the boats engaged in the races, the sea being most of the time very light. Mr W. B. Eyre filled the position of handicapper and timekeeper in his usual careful manner, and is to be congratulated onee again upon the result of his efforts, some of the finishes being exceedingly narrow.
