PERSONAL NOTES.

For some time past the friends of Mr. T. E. Taylor, M.P., have been somewhat concerned with regard to his health, and, though he has recently recovered from a severe illness, he has not jet been completely restored to health. The Rev. Dr. W. Morley, formerly of Auckland, and now general secretary to the Australasian Methodist Ministers’ Annuitant Fund, arrived by the Tofua last week, after an all-round visit to the various mission stations in the South Sea Islands. Mr. E. T. Hart, headmaster of thi' Beresford-street School, was accorded a vote of congratulation by the City Schools’ Committee last week upon his completion of 25 years of service under the committee, with the hope that he may continue for many years in the service of the committee as one of the leading educationalists of Auckland. Mr. Hart ’ first had charge of the Nelsonstreet School, being the first headmaster in the new building, and he then in turn took charge of Napier-street and Beresford-street Schools. The funeral of the late Mr. Matthew Ramsay Melntyre, the victim of th* drowning accident last week, took place at the Waikumete Cemetery. Deceased was a member of No. 3 Company of the Garrison Artillery, and was accorded a military funeral, the coffin being borne to its last resting-place on a gun-carriage, a firing party from deceased’s old corps performing the last military salute over the grave. A service was conducted by the Central Mission at the deceased’s late house in Wellesley-street, the Rev. E. Gillam (auxiliary chaplain) performing the final rites at the cemetery. A large number of Volunteers followed the remains to the cemetery. Archdeacon Cole was a passenger from the Islands by the Tofua last week. Mr. and Mrs. Withy and family, who have been staying at the Grand Hotel, left for their home at Rotorua by the express on Wednesday. Sir Joseph Ward was entertained at 'luncheon by the New Zealand Club at Wellington last week, and was elected the first honorary member. Mr. ,H. Owen, of Wellington, general manager of Sharland and Co., Ltd., arrived from the Empire City on Wednesday, and put up at the Grand Hotel. Wellington on Wednesday and put up at the Grand Hotel. Mr. William Thomas Whiteman, who died at Christchurch recently, was an old man-of-warsman, having served his apprenticeship on Nelson’s old flagship, the Victory, and had seen service in Chinese and Burmese waters. Mr. W. W. Bruce, of Wellington, arrived by Friday’s train, and is stopping at the Star Hotel. Mr. R. S. Braithwaite, of Wellington, was a passenger by the through train on Friday, and is putting up at the Central Hotel. Mr. A. A. Campbell, of Christhcurch, was a passenger by Friday’s express from the South, and is staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. W. F. Cederwall and Mr. L. Ingram, of Gisborne, came up by Thursday’s boat, and on Friday proceeded to Rotorua by the express. The Rev. C. E. Beecroft, ex-president of the Methodist Conference, has accepted a unanimous invitation to remain another year in the Feilding circuit. —Press Association. Mr. J. J. Kinsey, Consul for Belgium at Christchurch, has received advice that the King of the Belgians has nominated him as a Knight of the Order of Leopold.—Press Association. Mr. J. Henderson, of Wellington, accompanied by Miss Henderson and Miss Thompson, came up by the through train on Friday. During their visit they are staying at the Star Hotel. Mr. Atkinson (of the Hyde Park, U. branch of the Y.M.C.A., Chicago) has accepted the position of general secretary to the Auckland Y.M.C.A. Mt. Atkinson is a Scotsman. The Auckland City Council have engaged Mr. Stuart Richardson, electrical engineer for the city of Wellington, to report upon the Auckland Council’s proposal for an extension of their electrical department, and to confer with the City Engineer, Mr. Wyllie, on the schemes.

entertained, at luncheon, and also was received by the ladies of Amuri district. Among the passengers to arrive from Australia by the Warrimoo on Wednesday was Mr. C. A. Wilson, an evangelist, who has recently passed through the Bible College in Melbourne. Mr. Wilson has accepted a call to fill the pulpit of the Riddiford Street Church of Christ, Wellington, in succession vo Mr. A. F. Turner, now in Auckland. Australian files to hand report that Captain Morrisby and a number of the crew of the Canadian mail liner Marama assembled on board the vessel at Sydney on the 18th inst. to bid goodbye to one of their shipmates, Mr. J. H. C. Broad, for some time purser of the Marama. Captain Morrisby presented Mr. Broad with a handsome smoker’s companion, and made complimentary references to Mr. Broad’s services under him.

Mr. A. J. Lockie has rejoined the Tofua as second officer. Mr. and Mrs. F. Gaudin, of Auckland, left on a visit to Sydney by the Maheno on Monday. Mr. E. Chrisp, of Gisborne. an« Miss Chrisp were passengers by the Tarawera for the South on Saturday. Mr. E. F. Luttrell, of Christchurch, arrived by the Main Trunk train on Saturday. Lieutenant-Colonel Hume, J.P., late Inspector of Prisons, has been appointed a visiting Justice of all the prisons in the Dominion. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Whitcombe, of Christchurch, are at present on a visit to Auckland, and are staying at the Grand Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Studholme, of Canterbury, went up to Rotorua on Saturday for a visit which is expected to extend over a fortnight. Mr. and Mrs. Moodie, of Masterton, who have been staying at the Star Hotel, went up by the express on Saturday to spend a few days at Rotorua. Mr. W. Laird, who until recently held the position of superintendent engineer for the Northern Steamship Co., left by the Maheno for Australia on Monday. Colonel Gudgeon, who recently retired from the position of British Resident at the Cook Islands, was a passenger for Wellington by the Tarawera on Saturday. The Rev. Jas. Wilson has received the unanimous invitation of the quarterly meeting of the Auckland Methodist Mission to remain in the circuit for the eighth year. Mr Wilson has accepted the position. Mr. R. W. Holmes, Chief Engineer Public Works Department, left Wellington on Thursday by the Hinemoa to inspect the Cape Brett Lighthouse and other works under construction in the North. Mr. Moses W’hite, who has been manager of the New Zealand Loan Company at Timaru since 1902, and was previously accountant from 1875, has resigned, and will be succeeded by Mr. F, Barkas.—'Press Association. An old colonist of many years, in the person of Mr. John Hosking, died at his residence in Mary-street, Mt. Eden, last week, at the advanced age of 90 years. He was for a long time a prominent official in the Methodist Church. His son (Mr. I. H. Hosking. K.C.3, practising in Dunedin, arrived in Auckland on Tuesday next to attend his father’s funeral. Mrs Eleanor Fitzpatrick, wife of Mr Michael Fitzpatrick, of Erin Villa, Basque-road, died on Thursday at the age of 71 years. The late Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a native of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and landed in New Zealand in the year 1862, having lived most of the time in and around Auckland. Deceased, who was highly esteemed by her relations and friends, is survived by a family of thre sons and four daughters. Two of the Chambers of Commerce delegates arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Warrimoo—Mr E. Davies, of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and Captain J. Harwood, of Blackburn, England. Captain Harwood is a director of Henry Livesey, Ltd., machinists, and chairman of Lang Bridge, Ltd., engineers. He is a justice of the peace and borough councillor, and a late captain in the Indian volunteer force. Forty-seven visitors reach Bluff from Melbourne on Monday, and they are due in Auckland on the 23rd inst. The British Trade Commissioner, Mr Rolleston, will meet the delegates at Dunedin on the 13th Inst. The death of Mr. Francis E. N. Crombie at the comparatively early age of

42 years, occurred at Dr. Reid’s residence at Remuera on Thursday, heart disease being the cause. Deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr. J. Nicol Crombie, and was born at Devonport, went with his parents to England at an early age, but returned about 17 years ago, and has made Auckland his headquarters since. He had been in illhealth for some time past, and about a fortnight ago was removed to Dr. Reid’s house, hope of his recovery having then practically vanished. The late Mr. Crombie was an active participant in sports, and took a deep interest also in charities. At various times he was secretary of the Auckland Golf Club, a vice-commodore of the Auckland Rowing Club, and treasurer of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club. He presented a competition Cup to the Auckland division of the N.Z. Garrison Artillery last April. Deceased was a member of the Northern Club, the flag of which was flown half-mast on Friday. The funeral left Dr. Reid’s residence on Saturday for Purewa, among the mourners being representatives of the various associations with which the deceased gentleman had been identified
