October 8. A Book Tea. On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. Gcoige Merton gave “A Book Tea” at her residence on Park-terrace. A number of

girls were present, each wearing a card representing the title of a book. Some of these were really most artistic and clever. Miss Dorothy Symes succeeded in winning the first prize, and Miss M. Molineaux the eecond. Mrs. Merton wore a charming gown of black ninon over white silk, with insertion of black lace; Miss Gladys Merton, white muslin and lace frock; Miss Simpson Perry (Sydney), in whose honour the party was given, wae daintily gowned in a plumcoloured pinafore frock with sleeves and vest of embroidered muslin, white hat; Mrs. Stevenson, pale green and white spotted foulard dress, large white hat with green and white scarf. Other guests were: The Misses Humphreys, Denniston, Hanmer (2), Gosset, Burns (2), Gorrie (Auckland), Cracroft-Wilson, Park, Moore (2), Straehey, Russell, Hill, Bloxam, Reece, Anderson (2), Nan?arrow, Wood, Wilkin, Ross, and Knight.

Luncheon Party. A luncheon party was given by Mrs. Stevenson on Tuesday. The hostess was wearing a richly-braided plum-coloured costume; Miss Simpson Perry (Sydney), navy blue coat and skirt, pale blue hat; Mrs. Wardrop, green cloth Directoire gown, with vieux rose toque; Mis. Allen, blue and white striped costume, braided in black, Tuscan hat with black scarf; Miss Ogle, frock of eream cloth, with touches of black and white silk, large Tuscan hat lined with black and white and wreathed with shaded pink roses; Mrs. Thomas, dark green costume, hat to match; Mrs. C. Reid, tweed coat and skirt of dark grey, Tuscan hat; Mrs. W. Day, dark blue serge costume, floral hat; Mrs. Williams, black cloth dress, flowertrimmed hat; Mrs. G. Merton, navy blue costume, mole-coloured toque, with blue cornflower and velvet.

Euchre Party. Colonel and Mrs. Hawkins gave a euchre party on Tuesday evening in honour of Major and Mrs. Andrew, who are returning to India. The gathering took place at the Officers’ Club Rooms, and a very pleasant evening was spent.

Christ College Sports. The Cnrist’s College sports took place yesterday (Thursday), October 7th, in the College grounds. The day was fine, and there was a large attendance of ladies. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Moreland. Amongst those present were: Mrs. and Miss Julius, Mrs. Hansell, Mrs. and Miss Reece, Mrs. and the Misses Hanmer, Mrs. Wanklyn, Mrs. and Miss Denniston, the Misses Humphreys, Mrs. and the Misses Bloxam, Mrs. and the Misses Rose, Mrs. Jennings, Miss Murray, Mrs. and Miss Holmes, Miss Rutherford, Mrs. W. Day, Mrs. George Rhodes, Mrs. and Miss Louisson, Mrs. Frank Cowlishaw, Mrs. Marshal, Miss Cowlishaw, Mrs. Palmer, Mrs. and the Misses Moore, Mrs. Boys, Mrs. Savill, Miss Phillips, Mrs. and the Misses Burns. Lady Plunket as Honorary Colonel. Yesterday, Thursday, October 7th, Lady Plunket, wno is Honorary Colonel of the Second Regiment, North Canterbury Mounted Rifles, inspected the corps at Hawarden.. She was attended by Captain Shannon, A.D.C., and accompanied by Mrs. Hawkins, Miss Hill ana Miss Boyle. The handsome uniform of dark green cloth was most becoming to her Ladyship. Mr. Lance, “Horsley Downs, entertained them at luncheon, and the residents of Hawarden and Horsley Downs at afternoon tea. Personal. Mrs. G. G. Stead (Strowan Park, Christchurch) is at present staying at Sumner for change of air, after her illness. Her daughter (Mrs. Russell Grace) has returned to Wellington. Mrs. T. Cowlishaw and her little daughter left Christchurch on Thursday for Sydney, where they intend spending several weeks. Mrs. M. Lewin (Methven) and Mrs. Fowler (Ceylon) are staying with Mrs. Andrew Anderson, at Opawa. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Rutherford (Mendip Hills) have returned to Cnristchurch from a visit to Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wood (Christchurch) are visiting friends in Dunedin. Miss B. Russell hag left Christchurch for a visit to Auckland. Miss Chaytor (Blenheim) is the guest of. Mrs. John Deans, at Riccarton. Miss Miles (Palmerston North) ia visiting friends in Christchurch.
