October 8. The Savages. A party of savages came up from Wellington on Saturday last, and after being entertained at dinner by the local savages, gave one of their delightful programmes at the Empire Hall to a very large audience. It was a ladies’ night, and they, remembering the treat they had had on the last visit of the Wellington party, were present in numbers. The audience included: Mr. and Mrs. Cohen, Dr. and Mrs. Martin, Dr. and Mrs. Putnam, Dr. and Mrs. Peach, Mr and Mrs Morrah, Mr. L. A. Abraham and the Misses Abraham, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Waldegrave, Mr H. R. Waldegrave, and Miss Trixie Waldegrave, Mr and Mrs. Eliot, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Keeling, Mr. and Mrs. 11. F. Gibbons, Mr. and Mrs A. N. Gibbons, Mr. and Mrs Louision, Mr and Mrs R. Davis. Mrs. Cohen wore soft white satin with lace and touches of silver; Mrs. Martin, a cream opera coat with green velvet trimming over cream evening dress; Mrs Peach, white satin Empire toilette with silver sequin berthe; Mrs. Morrah, cream silk, the bodice effectively trimmed with lace; Mrs. C. E. Waldegrave, "black silk toilette; Miss Trixie Waldegrave, white satin charmeuse Directoire frock; Mrs. Eliot, cream and pink striped silk, with cream lace finished bodice; Mrs. Keeling, white lace toilette; Miss Armstrong, black satin; Mrs. A. N. Gibbons, black silk with cream lace berthe; Mrs. Louisson, eream satin, with embroidery in pale shades of silk. Bridge. The Bridge Club played at Mrs. W. Coombs’, Featherston-street, last night. Mrs and Miss Coombs, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Waldegrave, Mr. and Mrs. Morrah, Mrs Leary, Mrs. J. Bell, Mrs. Tripe, Mr Armstrong, Mr. E. Bell, and Mr. Reischer were those playing. Summer Sport. The wet, boisterous spring is keeping summer sport very backward. The Palmerston Tennis Club held its annual meeting on Wednesday night, and the election of officers for the coming year resulted: President, Mr. F. W. Connell; vice-presidents, Messrs, W. L. Fitzherbert, H. N. Watson, Goring Johnston, and Dr. Putnam; treasurer, Mr. Guy Reed; secretary, Mr. J. Pickett; committee, Mesdames Warburton and W. L. Fitzherbert and Messrs. Morrah, D. Reed, Spencer, D. Waldegrave, and L. Steadman. The Manawatu Tennis Club, with courts in a dry locality are making an effort to open their season to-morrow.
PeraoaaJ. Mrs. McGill has gone to Wellington <Ol a short stay. •Mr. C. H. F. McPherson, accountant in the local branch of the N-Z. Loan and Mercantile Company, has been appointed manager of the Loan Company in Dannevirke. Mrs. A. Webster, Wellington, made a short stay in Palmerston, on her way through to Wanganui. Mrs. E. W. Ditchings has returned Irom Pahiatua, and is staying with her another, Mrs. J. Bell, for a few days before going on to Levin. Mr. J. L. Barnicoat, manager of the Union Bank, has returned from the South, and is now going up to Auckland for a few weeks. Mrs. Barnicoat will accompany him on his trip to the North.
