September 16. At Home. The “At Home” given by Mrs. Jack Miller last Monday was most enjoyable. Between 40 and 50 ladies were present. The large dining and drawing-rooms were thrown into one room, and the decorations consisted of bowls of lovely spring blossoms, with anemones in many vivid shades arranged in silver vases to give the requisite dash of colour to th© tables. Guessing competitions were the order of the afternoon’s amusement, each guest having been requested to bring a photograph of herself during her childhood, also a representation of a favourite book title. There were' two first prizes—a silver-mounted eut glass smelling-salts bottle and a silver miniature photograph frame. A delicious afternoon tea was served, the party remaining until quite late in the afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Miller received their guests in the entrance hall. Mrs. Miller was gowned in a handsome white doth gown, profusely braided in cream silk soutache, lace yoke and sleeves. Mrs. Miller was assisted by hpr two sisters— Miss Peddie, white frock, pink floral hat; and Miss K. Peddie, pale blue blouse, navy cloth skirt, large blaek hat, nink and heliotrope flowers. Among those present were: Mrs. Jaek Beamish, brown costume, hat to match; Mrs. Barcroft, violet doth gown, blaek hat. pink roses; Mrs. Tosswill, black and pink floral silk voile, large blaek hat; Mrs. Gascoyne, dark brown costume, seal coat, blaek toque with jet trimmings: Mrs. De Lisle, blade eoat and skirt, pink floral toque: Mrs. Charles Scott, green doth Directoire. tucked net yoke and sleeves, grey marabout Husby hat: Mrs. M.ickersey, mole costume, hat to match; Mrs.
tandels, mole cloth costume, Merry Widow sailor trimmed with pink roses and mole tulle; Mrs. Stronach, brown eheck voile gown, trimmings of brown •ilk, brown hat with black velvet Streamers; Mrs. Gregory, fawn cloth costume, black velvet trimmings; Mrs. B. Johnston, navy costume, hat swathed ■with saxe blue silk; Mrs. Margoliouth '(Gisborne), blaek cloth coat and skirt, Mack hat, white wings; Miss Saunders , black costume, hat of black; Miss Luekie, brown Empire gown Irinuned with rich insertion, hat to match; Miss Newbigen, saxe blue coat and skirt, braided in black, black straw Merry Widow profusely trimmed with pink roses and satin ribbon; Miss Evans, grey check costume, hat swathed with ■blue silk; Miss Mackersey, cream voile gown; Miss Austin, navy coat and skirt braided in black, hat of black. Others present: Mesdames Newbigen, Lean, Lanauze, Clarke, Hurley, Banks, Maedonell, Murray, Beamish, Ebbett, Misses Cuthbert (Christchurch), Symes, Burn.
Personal. Miss Saunders (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs. Luekie (Southland-road). 'Mr. W. Evans left for Canterbury on Monday. Mrs. Dr. Copland is seriously indisposed. Miss Newbigen has returned from Blenheim. Mr. J. Ormond has gone to Sydney. Mr. G. P. Donnelly has returned from (Australia. Mrs. Margoliouth (Gisborne) is visiting her mother, Mrs. Lanauze, Hastings. Mesdames Tipping and A. Lean have gone to Auckland.
