SOUTH TARANAKI.

HAWERA, September 17. Spring Flower Show, A very successful spring "flower show •was held in the Opera House last Tuesday and Wednesday, the proceeds being in aid of St. Mary’s Church Fund. Although the weather- has been so boister,©us, it was considered that tire flowers ■were a very creditable display. The champion bloom was won by Mrs. Farrington with a long trumpet daffodil, ’“Glory of Leiden.” The tables and mantelpieces were unusually dainty. Miss F. Good won the first prize in the former competition, her table being artistically decorated with perennial, sweet pea and knnedyia, Mrs. McDiarnrid coming second. In the mantelpiece competition, Mirs. [R. Walsh secured first prize, the colours favoured being shades of heliotrope and cream, Miss Norris coming second. Each evening a most delightful concert was held; those assisting were: Mrs. Fantham, Mrs. Webster. •Misses Strack, Baker and Barley, Messrs Tarrant, Smith, Cameron, Chadwick, Batten, Weller, and Rev. Stent. Amongst those I noticed each day were: Mesdames Cassell, Stent, Nicholas, Barton, Caplen, D. Lysaght, Welsh, Farrington, •McDiarmid, J. Scott, Baine, Kitts, Hawken, Welbster, Cowern, Fantham, MicLean, Foyster, Atkinson (Wellington), ■Holder, W. Williams, Duckworth, Wallace, Lennon, PowdreD, Misses Lysaght, Moore (2), Wray, Seaton, Mcßae, Caplen (2), Duckworth, Pratt, Good (3), Alexander, White, Maling (Wanganui). Personal. Mrs. Campbell has returned from Auckland'. Mr. and Mrs. Dunn nave returned from their holiday spent in Auckland and Rotorua. Mrs. Atkinson (Wellington) ie visiting her sister, Mrs. Moore. Miss Glenn has returned to Hawera after visiting relatives In the South Island. (Mrs. Baker (Wanganui) spent a few days last week with her daughter, Mrs. A. Good. Mr. and Mrs. Bell have returned to Hawera, Mr. Bell having quite recovered from his recent illness. Mrs. Russell (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs. O’Callaghan. Miss Maling is visiting Miss Lysaght. Quite a gloom was cast over Hawera last Saturday when the sad news of Mrs. Bob Brewer’s death was known. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. Brewer and his two little children.
