The rapid waler erosion of parts of Cape Colony is attributed chiefly to burning of vegetation and the starting of paths by cattle and waggons. Once started, erosion is very rapid, and the Ongar, or Brak River, which did not exist sixty years ago, now averages 300 ft. in width, and! 15 ft. in depth. The same thing occurs in Australia.
