A FAMILIAR LANDMARK.
This strikin'. monument, which is one of the finest in the North Island, stands at the triangle formed by tile junction of the Great South Road and the Man<.ere Road a? Otahuhu. It was erected to the memory of a gallant officer who wi killed in the Maori war—Colonel Nixon, who was shot at Rangiawhia, in ihe Waikato The men of the Colonel’s troop, the Defence Force, were surroundinu a Maori whare, and the natives inside fired on them, killing several troopers'and wounding others,, among the latter being their leader, who subsequently oied from his wounds.
