Dear Bee, December 6. THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY held a very successful two-days’ flower show last week. Amongst those present were Mesdames Pharazyn Lomax, Izard Stanford, Mr. and Mrs. J. Studholme (Hawke’s Bay), Mr. and Mrs. Sarjeant, Mrs. and Miss Christie, Mrs. and Miss Wilford, Mrs. Anderson, Messrs. Mason, Stevenson, Barnicoat, Mrs. Moore Krull, Misses Hadfield, Hardcastle, Taylor, Cameron, Mrs. Good, Mrs. Palmer, Mr. and Mrs. Stevenson, Mrs. Barnicoat, Mrs. Foreman, Mrs. Krull, Mrs. G.-Marshall, Mrs. Sutherland. We are having such a glorious spell of summer weather, consequently THE TENNIS AND CROQUET LAWN are well patronised. At the tennis courts matches are being played for prizes presented by Mr. Barnicoat (the president). The Misses Anderson provided delicious afternoon tea last Saturday. Amongst those I noticed were Mrs. G. Saunders, Mrs. G. Currie. Mrs. A. Izard, Misses Neweombe, Moore, Darley, Newton, Christie (2), Standford, Messrs. Palmer, Gill-Carey. Strouts. Baywell, Davies, Dodgshun, Izard, Richie, McKay, Anderson. There were a large number of players and onlookers on the croquet lawns on Saturday afternoon. Tea was given by Mrs. D’Arcy, Mrs. P. Harold, Greenwood. During the whole of last week the long talked of KERMESS AND LIVING WHIST was staged at the Opera- House for funds in aid of our museum. In the first scene about 50 girls, daintily gowned in white frocks with rose-covered hoops, performed a number of difficult marching movements. The Japanese Court Dance was performed by thirty tiny maidens in gaily-coloured kimonos. The Gipsy Dance, which showed the gipsies dancing round the fire, wailing for their queen (Miss Bates- and her English lover (Mr. A. S. Anderson), was one of the prettiest dances. There were also Highland flings, tambourine, sword, and many other dances. One of the most popular was the shadow dance, beautifully performed by Miss Jones. The performers in the tableau, “Living Whist,” afterwards drew to the side of the stage, and prepared for their game. Mrs. Sargeant (Queen of Diamonds) wore a beautiful electric blue velvet gown with bertha of Teal lace; Mrs. Lomax (Queen of Clubs), black silk frock with black net, handsome panel of silver sequins, and the same on her corsage, with cream lace berthe, court train of scarlet and white with ermine; Mrs. Hughes (Queen of Hearts), beautiful white satin gown with long court train of the same material, cream lace on her corsage; Miss McNeill (Queen of Spades), black velvet trained gown with berthe of beautiful lace. All the men taking part wore bright scarlet uniforms, and the ladies pale shaded frocks with powdered hair, the whole effect being very gay and pretty. Amongst those performing were Mesdames Sarjeant, Hutton, McFarlane, Lomax, Greenwood, Hughes, Johnston, Nixon, Misses Darley. Stanford (2), Gresson, Bates, Collins, Newcombe, Allison, Nixon, McNeil!, Harrison, O’Brien, Jones (2), Messrs. Hutton. Anderson, Izard, Saywell, Dodgshun. Chamberlain, Grummit. Amongst the audiences were Mr. and Mrs. Stewart, Miss Stewart, Dr. Hatherly, Mr. Mason, Mrs. Anderson, Miss Brabant (Napier), Mr. and Mrs. Fairburn. Mr. and Mrs. Nixon, Mrs. and Miss Christie, Mr. and Mrs. John Watt, Mrs. and Misses Humphreys, Mr. and Mrs. L. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. F. Jones, Mis.
