THAMES V. AUCKLAND. Saturday was the worst possible day for hockey, yet nevertheless a considerable number of Interested spectators attended to watch the match between the above representatives. it was impossible for cither side to show their true merits, owing to the wietched state of the ground. Auckland obtaimd an easy win by nine goals to nil, and have now beaten every representative team in the* province during this season. 'l’he following comprised the teams: Thames: S. unable to make the trip, and the team ■ent was not a very strong one, although It included several capable players. Mason scored four goals. Morpeth two, BrookSmith two, and Shirriffs oho. Auckland outclassed their opponents from the start, and in the second spelt very little ploy occurred in the local team’s half. Martin, one of the Thames full backs, was unable to play in this spell. The Auckland forwards were repeatedly called back for “offside” play, due to their eagerness to increase the scores, ami many good chances were lost on this account.

Dr. Nell was unable to take his place as goalkeeper- in- the Auckland team, but 11. Young filled the vacancy satisfactorily. Allen was tiie more useful of the two fullbacks. and stopped some fast rushes. Court, his supporter, did not have much to do. Shirriffs was the pick of the halves, and played his usual first class game. Thornes was very satisfactory, and Brown played well as centre half. The forwards worked well together, and were much ahead of the Thames forwards In combination. Mason was very creditable as centre, and passed properly to his supporters. Morpeth showed his merits by playing a very reliable game. Miller was much better I bail in the previous icp. match. Brook-Smith ami Lepine were equally as goad. and both centred carefully and accurately.

Wilkes, the Thames goalkeeper, had a busy time, but managed io save a number of hard shots. Whitehead was very serviceable and safe as full back, and Ills hard hitting was of much advantage. The halves and the forwards all wotked hard, but they did not appear Io have much combination. The Rev. Williams was the host of the halves, and Henshaw, a dashing player, the pick of the forwards, although Klugham and Donovan played useful games. Mr Bushnell gave every satisfaction as referee. THE GISBORNE LADIES’ TOUR. The Gisborne ladies registered their fourth successive win on Salm day by defeating the Te Tlula Chib’s team by one goal to nil. The sloppy state of the ground made it lather unpleasant for the players, yet the game was stubbornly contested. Gisborne’s goat was obtained by Miss I. Goffe from a penalty bully just before the call of time. Mr Gresham efficiently refereed. The visitors returned to Gisborne on Tuesday, highly pleased with the cordiality extended to them by the local ladies’ clubs, especially Te Hula Club. SEASON CLOSES AT NAPIER. NAPIER, Monday. The Maroro Hockey Club brought its season io a close on Saturday, when a match between their second eleven ami the Hula (MemieH team was played, the latter winning by three* .goals to nil.
