Dear Bee, January 6. LAMPING PARTIES and children’s parties are the most prominent events just now, and for the former the weather has been delightful ail the time. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence (Avonside), with their sons and a number of their young friends, went to Southbridge camping for Christmas and New Year. Fishing was one of the chief amusements. No one felt very energetic, and an altogether lazy time was put in, all returning to town thoroughly browned and feeling ready to face whatever mayhap in 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Jennings (Sumner) have gone off to Mount Somers with a large party of young people, camping for about a fortnight. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Moore, St. Alban’s, and a party of their young friends, are camping out at Ellesmere, not far from the Selwyn River, where no doubt the trout will have a bad time. For New Year’s Day the great event always has been, and, judging by its popularity, always will be, the Lyttelton regatta, for visitors began to arrive early, and through the day assembled in thousands. The weather was perfect, and the surroundings hills were dotted over with picnic parties, while the launches and steamers were crowded. Airs. rey rainier, when about fifty children were present, and* a numlter of grownups to help amuse them, those chiefly assisting l>eing Mrs. G. anti Mis* Lee. Mrs. Wardrop, Mrs. and Miss Ogle. Mrs. T. Cowlishaw, and Mrs. J. C. Palmer. A very fine Christmas tree occupied a prominent position on the lawn, and in the children’s estimation one could sec “joy” writ large over every child’s face. Among others present were: Mrs. J. D. Hall, Miss Cowlishaw, Mrs. Carrington, Mrs. W. Bond, Mrs. L. Harley, Mrs. F. Lance, Mrs. Thomson (India), Mrs. W. Fox, Mrs. Turnbull, and several more. Mrs. John Anderson, Armagh street, gave a children’s party and Christmas tree for her small friends, which was greatly enjoyed by all present. Mrs. Andrew’ Anderson. ‘‘Merehison. ? Opaw’a, gave A DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON PARTY to some of her friends. The younger ones played tennis, while those who preferred it were entertained with some charming songs by Mrs. Burns, Misses Aland Graham and Hausmann. Mrs. Anderson wore a graceful black gown. She was ably assisted in looking after her guests by the Misses Mabel a.ml Gladys Anderson, in white linen gowns, and Miss Ruth, in pale blue muslin.
