WHEELS WITHIN WHEELS.
Hicks—“We had a great time at the club last night. Sorry not to see you there, Charley.” Mrs. Porter, (after Hicks had gone) —“Why, Charles, you told me you spent the whole of last evening at 'the club.” Mr. Porter (with great presence of mind) —“So I did, my dear. The reason Hicks didn’t see me was because he wasn’t there himself. Trying to deceive his wife, probably.” Mrs. Porter —“The wretch! And he would try to rob me of the confidence I have in you. I always did see some thing about that man I didn’t like.”
