A NAVAL FUNERAL. The remains of Theodore Hayward, chief petty officer and late steward to Admiral Beaumont, of the Royal Arthur, were interred last week at the Waikaraka Cemetery, Onehunga. When the train reached the Onehunga station the coffin was placed upon a gun-carriage and conveyed to the cemetery, the detachment of bluejackets following. The funeral cortege was preceded by the Royal Arthur's brass band, which played the “ Dead March ” in“ Saul.” The chaplain of the Royal Arthur, the Rev. F- A. Sims, met the procession and read the funeral service at the graveside, and the Rev. Canon Haselden read the Scripture lessons. At the conclusion of the interment a firing party of 18 bluejackets fired the customary three volleys over the grave, which was in the Anglican portion of the cemetery. Among those present were Messrs J. W. Allen, E. J. Clements, W- G. Garrard, and Adam Ay'les, naval veterans, H. H. Share (Admiral’s secretary). Commander Power, Lieutenant Wilmott (Royal Arthur), Midshipman Airdley Wilmott (Royal Arthur), and Gunner Sims, of the Ringarooma. Wreaths were given from the Government House, Mr G- Shiltock (Government, House), Admiral Beaumont, Mr and Mrs Bryce (Wellington), capfain and ward-room stewards of ILM.s. Ringarooma, lady superintendent and nurses Auckland Hospital, patients No. 2 ward Hospital, warrant officers Royal Arthur, Mr and Mrs C. Bishop, deceased’s messmates, Mrs Brain, ship’s company and chief petty officer (Royal Arthur).
