The Sports for all the children in the district on New Year's Day were very successful, and great delight was taken in the rides to anil from the cricket ground in Waiter-street, where they were held. in all sorts of vehicles, drawn by traction engines. I find that 1 have omitted to speak of the services in Market Place on Monilay night, to note the end of (lie old century and beginning of the new. The Garrison Band played for an hour, then there were speeches, which were inaudible to all except those in-the immediate vicinity of the-speak-ers, on account of the noise made by the boys with their crackers, etc., then the watch night service began, when hymns were sung by the united choirs, and prayers offered by the local clergyman, which terminated at midnight, the one piece of ordnance which the tow n boasts, firing a salute. Before Mr Sturtevant left here a very handsome service of plate was presented to him by those who esteemed him highly, not only in his private, but in his public capacity. Mr Conolly made the presentation and in felicitious terms expressed the regret of all in the departure of Mr Sturtevant. The Misses Greenfield gave the tea at the Marlborough Tennis Courts on Saturday, when among those present I noticed the Misses J. Chaytor, Hodson. Anderson, Smith, Horton (2). Farmar, E.
