AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, October 30. Mrs Cottle gave a very large AT HOME last Thursday afternoon at her pretty residence, in Maunsell-street, Parnell. The weather, which has been singularly wet and disagreeable during the past month, fortunately cleared up into a delightful, balmy day, though a few heavy ellouds still clung about the horizon, foretelling more rain at no distant period. The German Band was in attendance and took up their position upon the lawn at the entrance of the house, and their excellent music was quite a feature of the afternoon. During the interval of the band songs were sung by Mrs Ketogh and Miss Watkins. The reception room was prettily decorated with cabbage tree flowers, yellow daisies and greenery. Our hostess received her many guests in the hall, and was ably assisted by her daughter, Mrs Coney, who did all in their power to promote the pleasure of their many guests. The wide-spreading verandah was enclosed with Japanese blinds, and furnished with chairs, which made a cool and charming retreat, and from here the. guests wended to the diningroom, which was requisitioned for the dainty afternoon repast, where excellent tea and other delicacies were enjoyed. The table was uniquely decorated by a purple silk centre piece overlaid with embroidery and finished with vases of purple heliotrope and violets, intermingled with doses and greenery. During the afternoon Mrs Vernon Coney’s little baby boy was brought in and received marked attention from the guests. The last of the series of matinees given in St. Sepulchre’s Parish Hall by the Musical Matinee Society took place on Wednesday afternoon last and proved the most successful . of the whole season. The hall was crowded, and many had to be refused admission owing to the lack of room. Every item was most appreciatively received, but naturally the greatest share of the applause was won by Miss Lili Sharp, who gave two songs in a most charm-, ing manner. AUCKLAND LAWN TENNIS CLUB AT HOME. ,

The approaching advent of summer aud its particular amusements brings to a close many of the winter season’s At Homes and eard parties, of which during- the past few months there has been quite a number. Among these the series of At Homes in connection with the Auckland Lawn Tennis Club, was brought to a close on Thursday, evening last, when progressive euchre and dancing formed the evening’s amusement. Euchre was played by a number of guests until eleven o’clock, when supper was served. This over dancing occupied the rest of the evening. A recitation was given by the Rev. A. Smith, and was favourably received. There were six prizes given. Mrs Sharland and Miss Brabant won , the. first and second ladies’ prizes, while Mrs Parkes and Mrs Culpan carried off the first and second prizes for ladies who played as gentlemen. The gentlemen’s prizes were won by Messrs Coombes and Donald. The committee in charge of these entertainments may

Smith, Dr. Bett, Dr. Owen, etc., etc. “AT HOME.” Mrs. Ewen Alison invited a number of friends to an "at home” at “Lochaber,” Lake Takapuna, on Wednesday afternoon, in honour of Mrs. Joseph Ansenne, who is about to leave the Lake to take up her - residence at Hokianga. “Lochaber,” which is pleasantly situated on the sloping banks of the Rangitoto Channel, looked charming with its tastefully laidout grounds and fernery, the summer house, a complete Maori whare, lending to the picturesqueness of the situation. The drawing-room was effectively decorated with roses and other flowers in profusion. Tea was served in the drawing-room, and also at one end of the spacious verandah, which was enclosed for the purpose and arranged as an ante-room. The table w - as laid in the dining-room, laden with trifles, jellies and all the delicacies of the season, and exquisitely arranged and decorated with the loveliest of roses and flowers of the daintiest hues. Regret was expressed that the unfavourable weather prevented the guests taking full advantage of a stroll through the beautiful grounds and their surroundings. Songs were contributed during the afternoon by Mrs. Bradstreet, Misses Brett, Gordon, Alison and Berry. Mrs. Alison, who made a charming hostess, wore a handsome black satin with tucked white mousseline de soie inserted in sleeves and front of corsage. Miss Alison looked w'ell in China blue French muslin, and a white laee fichu. The guest of honour was attired in a royal blue and white figured foulard, with white lawn kilting on bodice to form a fichu, and burnt straw hat with a large bow of rose pink silk. Among those present were: Mesdames Brett, Crisp, Shakespear, Devore, Burningham. Quick, Berry, Oxley, Collins, Dixon, Morran, Blomfield, Geddes, A. Brett. Bradstreet ; Misses Houchen, Pickering - , Moon, Brett, Gordon, Dodson, Alison, Palmer, Berry (2), Mackay, Devore, etc., etc.

The last dance of the season i.n connection with Miss Linda Gibbons’ dancing classes took place in Sowerby’s Hall last Tuesday evening. Several of the guests wore fancy dress. -A-mongst those present were:—Mrs Gibbons in black silk; Mrs Evans also wore black silk; Miss Linda Gibbons looked very nice in white silk; Miss Stead looked well as “Ivy”; Miss Evans was pretty as “Grecian”; MissF.Evans looked w'ell as “Folly”; Misses Lee was pretty in evening dress; Misses Cooper and More, in white; Miss Linda Ruthe, shot silk; MissMatcomwore blue; Miss Ivy Hill looked graceful in pink silk, large picture *hat. Messrs Johnstone, MacCormick, McDonald, Edgar, Nolan, Sharland, Patterson (Sydney), Watkin, Crae, Evans. Griffin, etc.
