Dear Bee, August 23. Mr and Mrs Stowe entertained a large number of guests at A VERY PLEASANT AFTERNOON AT HOME last Friday. The house was nicely decorated with sweet spring flowers, the table being arranged with yellow jonquils and violets, and laden with every kind of tempting cake and sweets. Mrs Stowe received her guests in a gown of stone blue figured silk, both skirt and bodice being trimmed with pale ecru lace and narrow black velvet bands; Miss Stowe wore a grey gown, the bodice having a turned back collar of tomato velvet, showing a white silk vest; Miss M. Stowe, a drab-coloured canvas gown with a little lace and pale blue satin on the bodice; Mrs R. Stowe wore a black skirt and pale blue silk blouse with transparent lace yoke. During the afternoon some very enjoyable musical items were given by several of the guests, among them being Mr and Mrs Worsley, Mrs Bailey, Miss Fharazyn, Mrs Finlay, Miss O. Gore, and Miss N. Tanner (Napier). Some of those present were Lady Stout, who wore a grey coat- and skirt and toque of violet velvet bound with white grebe; Mrs Wallis, a green canvas gown, the bodice lightened with white silk and lace, burnt straw hat trimmed with pink silk; Mrs Pharazyn, handsome black gown and cape .-end a black bonnet trimmed with tips and mauve flowers; Miss Pharazyn wore a pale grey gown with vest of white silk trimmed with pale blue, grey straw hat with feathers to match; Mrs McPherson (England), a light brown gown trimmed with black satin and white lace on the bodice, black hat trimmed with tips and pink roses; Mrs Duncan, stylish black cloth gown and black velvet bonnet trimmed with pink; Mrs Pynsent, violet cloth jacket and skirt with cream lace vest, cream straw bonnet trimmed with red roses and leaves; Mrs J. Mr Clifford Walker gave his second entertainment in the Sydney-st reet Hall on Monday evening last. The Hall was packed, and I believe many who had not reserved seats were turn'd away from the doors. The audience was entertained entirely by Mr Walker during the first part of the programme, and his clever recitations and musical sketches were very much appreciated. The second half was devoted to the amusing little piece ’’Old Cronies,” Mr Walker being joined in this by Mr Morris Fox. Mrs Alfred Levi played two brilliant pianoforte solos as an overture to each part. Among the audience I saw Dr and Mrs Grace, Dr. and Mrs Martin. Mrs Menzies, Mr and Mrs Nelson, M- and Mrs D. Nathan. Mr and Mrs Lees, Professor and Mrs Brown. Mr and Mrs Mantel, Mrs Tuckey, Mrs Fitchett, Miss Rolleston, ete.
