A quiet week on ’Change. Gold output from mail to mail only £30,715, owing to batteries being shut down during holidays. N.Z. Insurance shares changed hands at 60/9 and 61/3, with buyers left at 60/6. South British were wanted at 52/, and Nationals sold at 16/5. During the period from December 14 to January 10, inclusive, 22,097 tons of ore were treated by the Mt. Lyell (Tasmania) Company. The converters produced 579 tons blister copper, containing: Copper, 572 tons; silver, 50,5250 z; gold, 18570 z. May Queen Extended Company has started crushing. The reef shows colours of gold. Good progress is being made with the works at the Grace Darling battery, and before the end of next month the stampers ought to be at work. The reef in the New Whan mine is looking well, being 3 feet wide, and showing nice dabs of gold in the stone. The crushing* plant of the Tairua Broken Hill’s Company is expected to be at work early next month. The Barrier Reef Company has about twenty men at work on a large cutting for the battery tram, and on sites for an ore storage hopper and a tailings pit. The Waihi Grand Junction Company’s pumping machinery is beginning to arrive. The Otarama brought 96 tons, and another 30 tons are on board the Star of N.Z. due next week. The pump is an 18 inch Cornish plunger and draw lifter. It should be capable of lifting about 70,000 gallons of water an hour. About 45 tons of ore from the Great Barrier mine have been shipped for treat nient. Waitekauri shares have steady demand at 39/, with sales reported up to 42/ during the week. The manager of the Chelmsford Company reports No. 1 lode is 2ft 4in wide, solid stone, and proves to be a well-defined body of high grade ore. Ore of fair quality is being won from the Hauraki Associated mine, Coromandel. Tributers in the May Queen of Hauraki Company, three parties, only crushed 194 tons of ore during the past four weeks for a return of bullion valued at £230 2/4. Cheap stocks at Waihi had transactions this week, Extendeds selling at BAd and 9d. and Souths at 1/3. Enquiries were also made for Ohiaemuri shares at 2d. Eleven parties of tributers in the Moanataiari mine crushed 73 tons of ore during the past four weeks for a yield of bullion worth £420 9/2. Koniata Reef shares have an upward tendency. Buyers advanced during the week from 1, 3 to 1/9, with sales reported at 2/. The N.Z. Talisman Company only ran 19 days this month, owing to the holidays. During that period 586 tons of ore were crushed for a yield of bullion valued at £1762. Buyers of Waihi - Silverton shares advanced from 7/6 to 8/, without sales resulting. It is seldom that Monowai shares are quoted on the Exchange. This week, however, a- line changed hands at 1/. During the past year the Matau dredge, which started work on February 13, won gold to the value of £10,046 6/10, and dividends equal to 18/6 per share have been declared. Coal shares are almost entirely neglected at present, no buyers quoting during the past week. In shipping stocks the only enquiry is for Northern Steam at 6/10, anil Devonport Ferry at 37/.
