CHRISTCHURCH.
Dear Bee, June 5. Mrs Duncan Cameron, Methven, has had quite a household of children staying with her for their holidays, among whom were the Misses Prins (2), Julius (2), Burns (2), Wilding and others. They came back to lessons last week, looking wonderfully well for thtir change, and give the most glowing accounts of what they did at Methven—bicycles, horses, driving, and every amusement possible, and I believe some of the charades got up chiefly by the children were well vzorth seeing, and the station hands thoroughly appreciated being invited in to see the children act, after which dancing was indulged in by all present. The children were all sorry to say good-bye, to Mrs Cameron, especially, as she leaves for England, but wi.-hed her a happy voyage and safe return with her little daughters, who are great favourites. The Horticultural Society held a fruit show in the Art Gallery on Thursday afternoon. The attendance was very poor, and altogether the show was not as successful as former years. Mrs Heaton Rhodes sent a good collection of apples and pears from Elmwood, which I think were the best exhibit in the show.
On Thursday evening, at the Clarendon Hotel, a pleasant evening was spent by the members of the Canterbry Rowi ig Club, who met to present their captain, Mr F. T. Cowlishaw, on the occasion of his approaching marriage, with a very handsome silver tea service suitably inscribed; also a lovely marble clock to Mr C. F. Turner, who is to be married on the same day. Mr Cowlishaw and Mr Turner acknowledged the gifts in suitable speeches, and the rest of the evening was spent in songs and music.
