‘AT HOME’ AT BISHOPSCOURT.

OUITE one of the smartest society functions of this year was the ‘ At Home ’ given by the Primate 'V and Mrs Cowie at their pretty and picturesque residence, B’.shopscourt, Parnell, to meet Bishop and Mrs Wallis and other delegates to the Church Congress now being held in Auckland. His Excellency the Governor, the Countess of Glasgow, Ladies Augusta and Alice, and Lady Helen Boyle were present, entering by the main gate. The other guests went in by the Tower entrance. Major Elliot and Captain Fielden were in attendance. The Primate and Mrs Cowie received their numerous guests in the semi-circular corridor, whence they passed into the reception rooms, which were speedily very crowded, the visitors overflowing on to the balcony and passages. Some excellent music was rendered, Mr Pollock’s powerful vocal organ making itself heard even through that large assembly, amidst a buzz of animated conversation. Miss Tilly charmed everyone with her lovely contralto voice. This was the first time she had sung in public, and enthusiastic musicians are predicting all sorts of successes for her in the near future. Supper was served in the large, cool library, where the prettily-arranged little tables laden with tempting eatables w*ere soon surrounded, and the excellent coffee, tea, sandwiches and cakes, etc., much appreciated by the guests. Mrs Cow’ie’s pleasant manner as a hostess is known to all, and she was most ably assisted to entertain her guests by her husband, her daughter, and her two sons, who were all indefatigable in their courteous attentions and genial hospitality. Mrs Cowie looked exceedingly well in a lavender-grey flowered dress with handsome white lace, lace cap with gold ornaments ; Miss Cowie was very sweet in a pretty pink evening blouse, dark skirt. Lady Glasgow was very much admired in a magnificent soft grey silk brocaded with grey sprays, lovely lace draped round the low cut corsage, secured with diamond ornaments, and brightened by a cluster of white roses on the right shoulder, diamond tiara ; Lady Augusta Boyle looked pretty in a beautiful satin dress of the new shade of yellow, covered with satin spotted gauze, folded yellow satin belt ; on the front of the low bodice w’as guipure lace to match the satin ; no flowers, a slender gold chain round the white throat the sole ornament ; Lady Alice’s dress was similar, only in white, which colour suits her to perfection ; Lady Helen Boyle wore black velvet with Mechlin lace. Owing to the great crush it was absolutely impossible to gain any very clear idea of the many pretty dresses worn. A few only, therefore, can be given out of the number who deserve notice : The Countess Seaforth, black, small white cap : Lady Caroline, quiet evening dress: Mrs Wallis (Wellington), black, black silk chiffon frilled bodice with cluster of white roses: Mrs Goring, black evening dress, diamond ornaments: Mrs Dudley, black silk relieved with white ; Mrs Nelson, black velvet, white lace on the bodice; Mrs Judd, figured black silky material, white lace on bodice and cap: Mrs Pritt, black evening dress, crimson folded silk round the throat; Mrs Goodhue, black skirt, velvet bodice with point lace, and touch of red velvet; Mrs Brett, black corded silk, with black lace and jet passementerie trimming: Miss Brett, black silk striped skirt, full black jetted lace low bodice over white eilk, lovely roses: Miss Eames, black, silk bodice with lace insertion over light silk at neck and wrists ; Mrs F.
